The cardinal is one of the most beautiful birds in North America. It is the mascot of one of the greatest baseball teams in history and is known for being a little timid, not picking fights with other birds like blue jays and crows will do. The male cardinal is the prettier one, the beautiful red one, which is to attract females. The dull brownish red color of the female is less obvious to predators, allowing her to take care of her young. The cardinal, like any other bird, prefers certain feeding conditions over others. If you are trying to attract cardinals around your home here are a few things you can do:
Set out open feeding trays that are big enough for them to stand on and move around as they eat. Since the cardinal likes to eat off the ground, you can also spread their favorite foods across your yard.
Their Favorite Foods
Cardinals love to eat foods such as sunflower seeds, nuts, grapes, oats, and safflower seeds. Just make a sturdy feeder with about a square foot of room for them to feed on and lay the food on there or spread it around on the ground. This will attract cardinals, but if you really want to make a more attractive habitat for them, put some feed around a bird bath for them. Cardinals love to hang around bodies of water.
If you want to add a bird house to your yard, a primitive one with plenty of room and nearly fully open on the front will attract cardinals. Put just enough of a front wall to keep a nest from falling out, about 2 inches high. Just make sure you mount the bird house securely on a tree, a post, or in a bush, as cardinals like to hang around bushes to stay away from more aggressive birds.
