I won’t say I was looking to lose a significant amount of weight, but I can claim that I was ready to experience a total body transformation. March of 2013, I embarked on a life changing experience that involved two major changes to my everyday routine. The first was signing up for CrossFit Monrovia; the second was kicking my “carb-o-holic” addiction and going on a strict Paleo diet.
Let me begin by saying neither of these was an easy transition from my current daily routine. Yes, I worked out about five times a week, and I ate what I thought were “healthy” and food nutritious meals for my body. But I almost felt that I experienced a plateau with my physique, and I was ready for a real change to happen.
My change came like a whirlwind when my fiancé encouraged me to try CrossFit with him. I figured I had nothing to lose (besides some spare pounds), so I gave in and attempted this “CrossFit.” Honestly, I had never experienced a type of workout routine like this before, and I have tried every single exercise class and DVD out there. This was different; it was a high intensity workout involving cardio and weight lifting that was customized to me specifically. Everyone performed the exact same movements of the workout, but it allowed the workout to be scaled to my level.
After a few CrossFit classes and getting to know some of the trainers there, I started to hear this “Paleo” word getting thrown around. Many people talked about it, a lot of people rolled their eyes at the mention of it, and some were so excited about it that they couldn’t help but encourage me to try it. But first I thought “Who or What is this Paleo talk.” I looked it up online and discovered it is a diet that focuses on natural foods and eliminating the consumption of processed foods. A Paleo diet incorporates protein (meats) and fresh vegetables and fruits, no pasta and no processed carbs. It is also known as the “Caveman Diet”. I must have joined CrossFit at the right time, as there was a 60 day leaning challenge that was about to start. To participate you had to keep a daily food log, agree to eat strict Paleo for 60 days, and dedicate 5-6 days to working out. I performed CrossFit as my workout, and I would also incorporate a 12 minute row 3-4 times a week on a rowing machine.
I started this leaning with about 24% body fat. Think of that what you will, I have always been a fairly petite individual; but my dedication and hard efforts to learn the Paleo diet, allowed me to rank 3rd place in this leaning competition! I went from 24% body fat down to 16%. I was the leanest I had ever been, and finally could see the definition of my muscles all over my body that I had tried for so many years to see. Had I known diet played such a large role in allowing me to look the way I had desired, I would have started to eat Paleo a long time ago.
To this day, I eat strict Paleo and continue to CrossFit at CrossFit Monrovia about 4-5 times a week. I definitely allow myself to splurge every once and a while, but have maintained the desired look I have always wanted. If you want to achieve that fit body look by summer, I encourage you to research the Paleo diet, and give it a chance! If I can do it in 60 days, so can you! Ready, Set, GO!
