In the last decade, technology has advanced at a fast pace. This has changed my life tremendously. Here’s how:
When I was in elementary school, I was one of the few people in my class that had access to the internet at home. I remember using online dictionaries and encyclopedias to help with various school projects, but at the time, and for many years after, most my teachers preferred that we didn’t use the internet for research. This was in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Fast forward to college years, in the late 2000s, I started exclusively going to school online. It’s amazing how anyone can learn and actually get a degree online now because of how technology has advanced. I’m very happy I was able to go to school online because it let me work at my pace, for some classes, and let me “go to school” practically anywhere. If I wasn’t home I could still do assignments if I had my laptop with me. It was very nice and now I prefer going to school online than in actual classrooms.
I moved from my hometown to a rural area town with my family when I was 19. This town didn’t have any stores near by and was mostly a “bedroom town,” meaning most the people that lived here commuted to another town for work. This proved to be difficult for me to find work. I took it upon myself to find work online. I had many years of prior experience house sitting for friends, family, and neighbors. I came across the website Care.com where I was able to make a profile and find people that needed a house or pet sitter. It was amazing and when I was at my peak I was making around $1,000 a month, which is pretty good considering I was only “working” for around two hours a day. I was still “going to school” online as well so that was a good time in my life.
Fast forward to now I am still working online. Now I am mainly a freelance writer and I write for various websites and blogs. I love how it’s possible to make a living from home. I really like that the harder I work the more money I make. It’s really motivated me and I actually enjoy what I do.
Another aspect of my life that is the way that it is because of advances in technology is my social life. Believe it or not I have some very close friends that I met, and exclusively talk to, online. I play video games online and have met some amazing people that I’ve known for a couple of years now because of the internet. These people have been there for me through my ups and downs and have given me great advice through the years. When I went through my divorce some of these people made me get through the hard times. I have been fortunate to meet some of these people in “real life” and I must say they are just as fantastic in “real life” as they are online. I would have never met these people otherwise so again I am thankful for advances in technology.
