Racial disparities in America continue to exist despite the fact that many European Americans claim that they are not racist. These same European Americans will tell you that America is the greatest nation in history, which is an attack on your citizenship, because you brought up undesirable facts about America’s past and present. The most typical dismissing comment from European Americans is that they will tell you they have experienced racism as well. So why don’t we just let this go?
Studies show that nearly %85 of European Americans suffer from a condition known as white bias. According to Harvard’s implicit bias test most Americans demonstrate an automatic preference for European Americans over African Americans. These are current studies, and as long as these preferences exist America can never be great for everyone only a preferred few. So while European Americans may state that they have experienced racism, and that this subject should just be dropped is a serious misunderstanding of the influence of bias on the lives of non-European Americans. This can be difficult to understand when you are a person who is preferred in society, as you may truly believe that race is not an issue and that people should just forget about racial bias altogether.
Please review the following statistics to understand that although some say that racial bias is not a problem the numbers and facts say otherwise. Non-European Americans account for %60 of the incarcerated population of America while only making up %30 percent of the population. According to a Bureau of Justice study one in three African American males will be incarcerated at some point in their lives. The department of education has put forward that African American students are detained by law enforcement more often than their European American counterparts. African Americans rate of unemployment is and has been double that of European Americans for about the last half century. Schools are still separated by race and even more so than three decades ago.
The point is that there are problems in American society, but any and every society has problems. It is easy to say just forget about this if you are a European American because the society is already geared to favor you but if you are an African American then it is not so easy to just forget about this as you continually carry the burden of existing in a society that is systematically against you.
