I started the terrible habit of smoking twenty years ago at a bar where I worked. My manager-boyfriend had just broken up with me and I was angry. I asked for a cigarette from a fellow waitress because I was upset and feeling rebellious. The ex-boyfriend smoked and I didn’t; he told me I was too pretty to smoke and she told me it was an expensive habit. They were both right.
At the age of 42, I realized that it was time to quit no matter how much I love smoking and the idea of its esoteric qualities. I have quit but cigarettes are like demons…they keep coming back to haunt you.
Ration the smokes
Mark your cigarettes with a pencil, gradually getting closer to the top, week by week and as long as you smoke down to the mark, you are golden. This is ingenious if you have the will power. It’s a method that is gradual and was what helped me quit while trying to become pregnant.
Smoke in your garage or outside but never in your home. Not only does cigarette smoke create a terrible film on your walls, it develops an environment of, “I can smoke here all the time.” I don’t hold too much to the second-hand smoke factor, but I do know that it causes problems for others. The less you smoke inside, the better. Lessen your trips outside gradually and one day you won’t have to go there at all.
The electronic cigarette is the gateway cig of modern fabulousness. Not only do you get the sensation of smoking, you get all types of flavors. Want a cheesecake in your mouth? Key Lime pie? How about some clove? The liquids that are available are intense and the vapor that is released is in no way harmful. It’s a win win situation for smokers; especially for those who frequent areas where smoking isn’t allowed.
Besides the “I’m pregnant” method, where every puff equals guilt and you quit because you love your growing baby, electronic cigarettes are the fastest method I have found, to stop puffing the carcinogens. They are available in so many different varieties that it’s hard to not stop smoking.
We have to do what works for us. We are all different. There is the rubber band method and there is cold turkey which, frankly, hasn’t worked for me. We have to make the best choice for ourselves and finding what works ensures that we will “live long and prosper”.
