As a graduate student, I am constantly writing things down and taking notes. A tablet would sure come in handy. Being able to take notes and create presentations all in one screen really would make my life easier. One problem though. I am a student and do not have a lot of money for this purchase. Saving $400 for a new Microsoft Surface seems like a daunting task. Daunting yes, but definitely possible, and here is how I plan to do it:
No More Take Out
As a student, it seems I am always in a rush. Eating take-out food just makes everything easier. If I want to save money, this habit needs to stop. Almost everyday I will run across street from campus and grab something quick for lunch, so you can see this adds up throughout a month. If I start going grocery shopping and taking my lunch to school, I would estimate that I can save around $50 a week. This will be the easiest thing I can do to save money.
Take a Walk
I live around 1.5 miles from campus, and most of the time I still choose to drive. For the next month I plan on walking to and from school to save on gas money. This will not make a major dent in the Surface price, but it will help. This month I will be able to save $25 on gas as long as the weather cooperates. Living in Oklahoma, sometimes the weather can be crazy and walking isn’t always an option.
Stay Away From Redbox
One of my favorite things to do at night is rent or buy movies. I would estimate that I rent 3-4 movies each week. It doesn’t help that the movie kiosk is right across from where I live. I seem to always have some free time, and this is a great way to pass it. If I were to cut out my movie watching for a whole month, I will save another $25 and be that much closer to my goal.
As you can see, if I keep up these three easy habits for 5-6 weeks, I will have enough money saved for my Microsoft Surface in no time. If I were to keep it up even longer, I could get the Surface 2 Pro that I have had my eyes on since Microsoft released it. Hopefully with these few sacrifices I will be able to reach my goal and have a new Surface in no time.
