An attractive woman will look in the mirror and see a fat girl. An obese man will look in the mirror and see a chiseled replica of the David by Michelangelo. That was true in my case. I weighed 336 lbs. Doesn’t sound like a lot? I looked as big as my refrigerator. But I was only able to realize it when I got on a scale. I was in total denial. For a year after that I completely ignored the fact that I was a whale. Until one day I had a medical scare that woke me up. I thought I was having a heart attack. It was my body trying to tell me something: “You’re fat! Do something about it before it’s too late!”
Well, I did something about it. In the span of a year and five months, I lost 104 lbs. No medical procedure. No expensive diet program. No dubious pills. No boot camp-style exercise regimen. I hate exercise routines. The secret to my success? Two very simple lifestyle changes: education and dedication.
Education liberates you from any seemingly inescapable burden or obstacle. The first thing I did was comb the internet for weight loss strategies, focusing on do-it-yourself kind of advice. Of course I came across countless marketing schemes trying to get me to buy their product. I never did. You don’t need anything to effect change in your weight but to eliminate certain habits and incorporate others:
Strategy: stop drinking sugary drinks. Pass up on the cake. Eat green vegetables. Use only extra virgin olive oil. Snack on nuts, fruits, dried meat, cheddar, and lots of water between meals and snacks. Also, never eat after 6:30 p.m. unless it’s 7 p.m. No fast food joints. Do light exercise for 15 to 20 minutes five days a week, and take one day off from the “diet”.
The most important part of this plan is the second aspect to it: dedication. Have you ever heard someone say this: “You don’t need to tell me. I know what to do already!” And you think: “Well, then why don’t you do it already?” The fact is that knowing what to do and doing what you know needs to get done are totally different mind sets. And that is the overall lesson. For effective, long-term weight loss and weight loss management do like Nike: Just do it!
