I went into the salon to get a trim and my bangs shaped. I left looking like I had fallen out of a bad ’70s movie. My bangs were crooked, I’d gotten more than just a trim on the ends, and the hairdresser had enthusiastically curled my hair, resulting in insane frizziness and poofiness. I’m guessing she did this to hide the fact that she had no ability to cut hair correctly.
When she finally finished, showing me my reflection in the mirror, I was so shocked and baffled I paid her and left without a second thought. Hair cuts are expensive, and I didn’t have the money or time to go to another salon, so I fled home, intent on solving my hair crisis on my own.
This was the easiest part to remedy. I took a shower as soon as I got home, and my hair settled back into it’s natural shape, mostly straight with a light amount of curl.
Unfortunately, there’s not much you can do about hair being cut too short. My hair tends to poof out more when it’s short, and straighten out when it’s longer and weighed down.
For the next couple months, I would use a straightening iron to smooth out the poofiness. This also helped to make it look longer by taking away some of the natural curl. I also used hair product designed at removing frizz and poofiness that would protect my hair from the iron.
I decided to enjoy the ease that washing short hair came along with, and eventually it grew back out.
I’d asked for side swept bangs. I’m not sure what the hair dress thought I said, but the hair on my forehead definitely didn’t look like sideswept bangs. I could have just left them, bangs are notoriously tricky to cut correctly at home, but I had to do something with them, considering how uneven they were.
I investigated a number of tutorials on how to cut side swept bangs at home, and eventually decided I was brave enough to try cutting them on my own. After reading the tutorial a dozen times to make sure I was doing it right, I cut my own bangs.
They were a little short, having already been cut, but I was satisfied with the end result. I also gained the added bonus of being able to cut my bangs when they were getting too long after. So in the end, everything worked out okay, a disaster turned into a learning experience.
