Two years after the birth of my second child and several failed low calorie diet attempts, I found myself disgusted and wondering if I would ever enjoy swimsuit shopping again. I was reluctant to try the Atkins diet, thinking that it couldn’t actually be possible to eat bacon and still lose weight. Yet, a friend of mine started losing weight on the Atkins Diet, and she looked fantastic. I decided this was the diet I would follow to help me meet my spring weight-loss goal. Three months later, I had dropped 40 pounds and gone from a size 13 to a 5.
Why the Atkins Diet Worked for Me
It is the only diet I have ever been on that doesn’t actually feel like a diet. I had been programmed to the low-calorie and depraved weight-loss regimens that I had been on before. As I devoured a western omelet, I wasn’t sure rather to feel proud or guilty, but when I lost seven pounds in the first week, I instantly gained a whole new perspective on dieting.
The Only Hangup of the Atkins Diet
For some, a bun-less hamburger or nothing but steak may get old. I have found that if you get creative with your cooking and look for Atkins friendly alternatives to make low carb versions of your favorite dishes, you don’t have to miss out at all. I regularly enjoy things like low carb pizza, taco salad, and even French Toast. And who says you can’t have bread on the Atkins Diet? Some brands of low carb bread only contain 6 net grams per slice. There are many low carb flour substitutes on the market as well.
Tips for Following the Atkins Diet
As with any diet, you should put nutrition before weight-loss. Making sure you add plenty of healthy variety to your diet and don’t plan on living on bacon alone will help insure you get the nutrients you need and keep you from getting burned out on the Atkins Diet and falling off track. I decided to take a daily multivitamin with this diet as well.
Do You Have to Exercise to Lose Weight on the Atkins Diet?
Technically speaking, you would probably still lose weight on the Atkins diet if you didn’t go out of your way to exercise at all, but I found including a workout strategy in my tactics well worth the extra effort. Not only to boost the results but to help make sure you are losing fat instead of muscle.
In the Long Run..
For me, a well balanced Atkins Diet in combination with a regular workout routine turned out to be the perfect recipe for spring weight-loss success, and I look forward again to swimsuit shopping this year. I would recommend this diet to anyone who is struggling with a traditional low calorie diet or other weight-loss plan and hasn’t tried it yet.
