After Cassidy got off the phone; she just had enough time to tape her mother’s wrists so there would be no more bleeding and to find a robe to drape over her mother. She tried to get her mom out of the bathtub but she wasn’t strong enough. It was then that medics came to the door.
One of the medics was a lady so she helped Cassidy to get her mom out of the bathtub and into the robe.
Cassidy wanted to ride in the ambulance but they would not let her. They found out she was waiting for her father and said it was best that she stay home and wait for her dad. They told her they would be taking her mom to Ste. Mary’s hospital.
Cassidy reluctantly agreed. She stayed back and paced the floors, her mind was fuzzy she just couldn’t think straight. She just couldn’t think about her mom dying. She just couldn’t.
She heard the keys in the door and thought it was her dad but it turned out to be her brother. Cassidy could barely talk as she tried to explain what had happened.
Pete was so angry it looked like he was about pop some veins in his neck and face. It is funny, Cassidy thought that she could observe what Pete looked like in a time like this. Somehow she felt a little better not being alone.
After Cassidy finished with the story Pete shouted out, “That bastard he did that to her.” He punched a big hole hallway of the house. Cassidy’s emotions turned to fear. She had never seen her brother like this before.
It was true that she had a somewhat good relationship in the old house when they were younger but her brother had changed after the incident where the social worker had to get involved. He wasn’t the happy little boy she knew but became more of a recluse. However, she had never seen him angry before.
Pete picked up his keys and Cassidy asked, “Where are you going don’t leave me here alone like this.” Even an angry brother was better than staying in the house alone not knowing what was happening with her mother.
She asked a second time,
“Where are you going?”
“Where do you think I am going.”
“Please Pete don’t leave me here along.”
“Wait for the creep to show up, the hypocrite will be here shortly and putting on a good act no doubt.”
Pete slammed the door shut and Cassidy turned out the lights and waited in the dark. It seemed like an eternity but it was approximately 45 minutes later when her dad arrive. All Cassidy wanted was her dad to take her in his arms and console her like he did when she was a little girl. Instead, her dad walked through the door, turned the lights on called out for her and as she came to him he didn’t console her he just told her to get into the car as there was no time to waste.
They waited for what seemed like hours for any word about their mother. Cassidy and Pete were not allowed to see their mother but the doctor allowed letting in her dad for a few minutes.
“This is bullshit,” Pete said and he got up to go home.
“Are you going home,” Cassidy asked,
“No I going out, I won’t be home tonight, I will call you later to see how mom is doing. I can’t deal with this shit.”
It was 3 a.m. when her dad returned. He didn’t even ask where Pete went. He told Cassidy her mother was okay, the wounds were superficial. She just passed out in the bathtub because of her heavy drinking. Cassidy’s mom would have to stay in the hospital for observation on the psych ward. Peter Sr would be called by the psychiatrist to fill in the missing details and to be updated on Helen’s condition within the week.
Father and daughter drove back home in silence.
“When they got in the house Peter Sr had no choice but to notice the big hole in the wall. He just told Cassidy it was late, to go to bed she had school in the morning. Then he said, on second thought you have been through a lot, if you don’t want to go to school just call me on my cell I will answer it right away this time. If you don’t want to go to school I’ll call the school and let them know what happened and you may feel like taking a few days off before you return.”
He then went upstairs to his own bedroom and left Cassidy standing in the hallway to do whatever she wanted. Cassidy went up to her bedroom and plunked on the bed shoes and all. Her mind was all over the place.
She tried to remember the incident but kept getting confused. She saw her mom in the bathtub and then she saw her mom brushing her long beautiful hair. She was standing beside her mom and she was a little girl. Her mom started brushing her raven hair and remarking how Cassidy’s hair was even darker and prettier than her own.
She then saw Dad come into the bedroom to ask what his beautiful girls were doing and swooping her up and dancing around with her in his arms. Mom and Dad were happy then and she was happy too.
