At 55 I had my first run in with gout. It was late in 2013, and I found myself hobbling around with a throbbing big toe on my right foot. I knew that a podiatrist was the professional to see whenever you experience foot problems. Because the human foot contains 26 bones, 33 joints, and more than a hundred muscles, ligaments and tendons, this is not a place to scrimp on healthcare dollars.
Gout is caused by a concentration of uric acid in a patient’s joints. It is often felt in the foot, and the big toe is a frequent target. Gout is a form of arthritis.
When I arrived at my small town podiatrist office, I was in such agony that I was beginning to have pain in my hip as well. By throwing my stride off so much, my gout was beginning to hurt me in places where I didn’t even have gout.
There is a test, the doctor explained, which would confirm without a doubt that I had gout. He also explained that there was not much else which could cause my symptoms and suggested a prescription for a medicine which he said should relieve my suffering within a few days.
As he filled the prescription, the pharmacist explained that the cost of the gout medicine had skyrocketed after all but one company had gotten out of the business making that drug, Colchicine.
I took the medicine, and as I was assured, the pain went away within a few days. I followed the orders my podiatrist gave me for eating, exercising, and fluid intake.
Months later I ate too many lentils, which are high in purines, the cause of the crystals which cause the pain, and I had a recurrence. Knowing what the doctor would do, I went online to learn more. I found that gout will often resolve itself if you eat properly, so I did not go to the doctor. By watching what I ate and drank I was able to end my gout attack without the aid of another visit to the doctor.
If you experience pain in your big toes, especially if it comes on unexpectedly, go to a podiatrist right away and begin treatment. She will give you a list of foods to eat and other steps you can take to avoid future flairs. I have found that dark cherry juice drunk daily helps as well.
