Heartburn affects millions of people around the globe, and it has become one of the biggest markets for over the counter medicine. These medications have become increasingly costly and can have some unfortunate side effects. Now I will shed a little light on how you can get rid of the heartburn without spending an insane amount of money.
PREVENTION IS BEST
I personally suffer a few times a week from heartburn. There are several ways to quiet the burn without using costly or potentially harmful medicines. First, I have found that avoiding eating late at night or right before bed will help with controlling heartburn. It is also best to not eat as many overly spicy or greasy foods, as these contain acid that will trigger an attack. Healthier and smarter dietary choices will be your overall most effective way to deal with frequent heartburn.
CHEAP AND EASY REMEDIES
Another easy way to beat heartburn is by eating mints at the first sign of heartburn symptoms. My personal favorite mint is the “Wint-O-Green” Lifesavers. The mint acts as a cooling agent and will cause the acid to retreat. Many mints contain sodium bicarbonate or baking soda, which is a proven acid reducer. Of course mixing baking soda with water will neutralize the acid, but is not very tasty. Chewing gum acts similarly and will cause the saliva production to force the acid back down into the stomach. I have discovered that drinking a glass of milk will help to knock out heartburn fast, whereas acidic beverages, like sodas, coffee, or juices can cause heartburn to be worse.
There has not been much research into herbal remedies for heartburn, however an herb called Slippery Elm, has been used for centuries to treat gastrointestinal problems. Aloe Vera juice has been used to heal the intestinal tract and therefore will help with heartburn. Licorice has been proven to help with heartburn and other stomach problems, like ulcers for example. Most of the research into herbal remedies has centered around a product called Iberogast. It is made with 9 different herbs, including:
Clown’s mustard plant
This concoction may work, but it is unknown at this time which specific herb is the cause for the heartburn killing properties. There has been some speculation that the sleep aid Melatonin has heartburn reducing properties, but no real evidence has been given.
Using these homemade remedies will hopefully spare you from suffering from the pain of heartburn. Without a doubt, the best way to end the heartburn is to pay attention to your eating habits, and the foods that you consume. A healthier diet will often cut the number of heartburn attacks per week, in half or better. Some heartburn cannot be prevented, so keeping some of these remedies handy can make sure that you suffer as little as possible.
