Essential oils have tons of fragrance and you can use them in many different ways in your home. One popular scent for both crafters and decorators is cinnamon and you can make homemade cinnamon oil yourself. Jazz up the scent of a stale basket of potpourri or sprinkle a few drops of homemade cinnamon oil on a linen sachet and hide it in the linen drawer. Cinnamon oil has an earthy, spicy scent that adds a cozy aroma to your home, especially during fall and winter. Toss a collection of pinecones, nuts or leaves in a coating of homemade cinnamon oil and enjoy the fragrance for months. If you have scent lovers in your family, make extra and bottle it to give for the holidays.
Making Homemade Cinnamon Oil
You need a wide mouth Mason jar with a lid for this craft. For the most zesty smelling homemade cinnamon oil, I recommend using fresh cinnamon sticks. They should smell spicy and slightly sweet. Place five or more cinnamon sticks in the jar and the cover the cinnamon sticks with extra-virgin olive oil. Put the lid on the jar securely. Place the jar in a window. The sun will cook this vivid scent into the sticks. Put the jar in a sunny window and shake it daily. After three weeks, remove the sticks. Voila! You have homemade cinnamon oil!
Storing Cinnamon Oil
I love grabbing decorative glass bottles from the hobby store for this craft. You’ll need bottles with corked lids to keep the fragrance from escaping. Position a fragrance funnel in the glass bottle and line it with cheesecloth. Carefully pour the cinnamon oil into the funnel, filling the bottle. Cork the bottle and store it in a cool spot until you are ready to use it.
Giving As Gifts
If you plan to give your cinnamon oil to a loved one as a gift, tie a bow around the neck and attach an instruction card. It might be a good idea to add your ingredient list to the card, just to warn anyone who may be allergic to olive oil or cinnamon. Give instructions on how to use the oil.
Suggested Uses for DIY Cinnamon Oil
- Spruce up a dried floral arrangement with a few drops of your concoction.
- Refresh an old cinnamon brush by rubbing some of the oil on the whisks.
- Touch a dab of cinnamon oil to the wrapping paper of a gift to give it a beautiful fragrance.
