A runny noise can be a miserable condition for anyone. While the underlying cause for a runny nose often varies from person to person, some causes include: allergies, colds or infections and sinus irritation. A runny nose can be irritated by constant blowing and wiping with tissue which causes the lining of the nose to become irritated and actually makes a runny nose worse. If you can’t figure out the underlying cause of a runny nose, you can at least gain some relief by using these simple home remedies comprised of every day household items found in most kitchens.
Salt water nasal drops- combine one tablespoon of ordinary household salt with fresh water. Use a dropper or q tip to apply to the inside of the nostrils. This helps to dry up the drainage and the salt helps clean the nasal cavities of infection and germs which may be irritating the nasal passages causing them to discharge drainage.
Onion tea- used for generations among worldwide populations, onion tea is touted as one of the best home remedies for a runny nose. Steep a fresh slice of onion in one cup of boiling water for a few minutes, when the water cools to lukewarm, drink generously. Repeat often throughout the day until the runny nose is relieved. This can be repeated for a few days until complete relief is achieved. Another home remedy involving onions is to slice up a couple of raw onions and soak them in vinegar for at least an hour then eat the onions and drink the vinegar. This cure is recommended to give immediate relief for a runny nose and is also a good solution for relieving head colds. Follow up with the onion tea as needed.
Spicy foods- while those with sensitive stomachs might want to avoid this method, foods prepared with ginger, cayenne pepper or Indian curry are a frequently used treatment for a runny nose. The result is actually a better before worse kind of cure. Spicy foods tend to cause the nose to drain more, but this is because they induce secretion in the nasal lining which will help to flush out any irritants or toxins which are causing the runny nose to begin with. An infusion of straight garlic, eating a fresh clove of garlic over a few hours, eating a whole raw onion, and a teaspoon of horseradish sauce every few hours throughout the day are also cures which create this effect and have been used by many cultures as a cure all treatment for runny nose and cold symptoms to quite an effective extent.
For a runny nose caused by allergies, an infusion of nettle tea or nettle supplements found at any health food store is recommended. The nettle helps relieve nasal inflammation caused by sneezing due to allergies which causes nasal drainage. Golden seal is also a highly detoxifying agent and can be taken in the form of teas or capsules. It helps clear the body of toxins that cause the allergic reaction and potential infection causing germs. To fight reoccurring runny nose and cold or allergy symptoms, adopt a healthy diet rich in vitamin C and D including such foods as fresh fruit juice, oranges or other citric fruits as well as leafy vegetables such as cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli. Eating steamed vegetables also helps alleviate cold and allergy symptoms and fights recurrence of runny noses.
