A hot spot is a place where a dog licks until the fur it worn off. It is usually on the dogs leg but can be on other parts of a dogs body. A dog can lick the spot so much that it can start to bleed and may get infected. The reason that a dog develops a hot spot is emotional and the dog is not happy about something. They are scared, frightened or bored and in order to get rid of the hot spot for good is to make changes in the dog’s life.
I adopted a dog that came to me with a hot spot. He had licked the spot bare and the owners gave me a can of medicine to help it heal. This dog was not happy and he liked to lick that spot but after a month with us he stopped and he did not do it again for the 5 years we had him but one other time. We left him in a strange house for an hour while we went to eat and he licked the spot. That was the only time he did it under our care.
The difference that made him stop licking the spot was we did not leave him alone. A dog is a pack animal and is only happy when with the family. We had 2 other dogs to fill any empty time he may have had without us. This seemed like the solution to keep him from licking the hot spot. Keep him with constant companionship. Since he was never alone he did not feel anxious or lonely and his leg healed and he did not lick it anymore.
If you have a dog with a hot spot you may want to do more then give him a neck cone of shame and some medicine. Give the dog a pet so they are never alone. You may feel that two dogs are more then you can handle but they play with each other and actually let you have more free time. Getting another dog can be hard at first but once the dog gets use to the idea of living with you they calm down. Don’t adopt a puppy or it will be more work for you. There are plenty of older housebroken dogs that can help you keep your dog happy and less anxious. Older dogs need homes and you will also help out a homeless older dog.
