Moms rarely get a break. Even after the kids are in dreamland, there are dishes to wash, permission slips to sign and school lunches to prepare. And the summer months only seem to get busier. I feel like I’m constantly on the go. It’s so tempting to zip through a fast food restaurant, but don’t mess up your healthy eating streak. Use these on-the-go healthy eating tips.
Plan Your Day
One of the great things about summer is the carefree nature of your days, but don’t blow off planning completely. If you know ahead of time where you’re going and how long you’ll be gone, you’re better able to plan your meals and snacks.
You can also tweak your schedule a little to make it better suited to healthy eating. For example, plan your play date to start in early afternoon so you can eat a healthy lunch at home first. Or make sure you end a morning play date in time to get home for a late lunch.
Eat Before You Go
Always have a healthy meal or snack before you leave the house. It’s easy to fall behind schedule and feel like you have to rush out the door, but you’ll be glad you took the time to eat. When you get overly hungry, you tend to grab the first thing you can find. When you’re out and about the most convenient options usually aren’t very healthy.
Take It With You
Another thing to take time for in the morning is packing snacks and meals that you’ll miss at home. Some nuts, a bag of cereal, a granola bar or some dried or fresh fruit are all easy snack options that don’t take much prep time. If you know you’ll be gone during lunch, pack yourself something and put it in an insulated lunch bag. Instead of reaching for a bag of fast food, you can reach for your healthy lunch.
If you do find yourself at a fast food restaurant, keep your choices in check. It’s tempting to go all out since you’re already eating junk food. But making a few simple choices could save you a bundle of calories. Most fast food restaurants offer some type of salad. If you want a burger, pair it with a side salad. Stick with unsweetened ice tea or water to drink. Or choose a grilled chicken sandwich instead of breaded chicken.
