Eventually everyone becomes a senior. No, not a senior in high school, a senior as in elderly person. But being young, you really don’t think about how things change when you get older. It never really crosses your mind until you are a senior yourself.
Right now seniors are only 15% of the population, but they account for 40% of proscriptions being taken. Now if you really think about that, what comes to mind for you? For myself it shows that as we get older we are more prone to illnesses, whether mental or physical. Some seniors suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and right now the level is 5.4 million and is expected to increase to 16 million by 2050. Alzheimer’s disease is a disease that attacks brain cells and results in memory loss, thinking and language skill, and behavioral changes. Even though the percentage of Alzheimer’s disease is high, it is actually not a natural part of the aging process.
It has been proven that in 2005 there was 67,473 centenarians, centenarians are people who are 100 or over. We have actually come a very long way with the span of someones life in the last few decades. It was that people where dying at much younger ages than they are now. Now days the life span of a person is they live to be 88.2 years old.
It is proven that if you want your senior years to be just as good as your youth years you should be active and fit. If you are active and fit it reduces the stress of bone problems and other physical problems you might have. It is proven that if you are fit and active you seem to live longer compared to a person who is not active.
Even myself I haven’t really thought about my senior years, just because I am only in my 20’s but, maybe as we get older we actually need to really think of what we want out of our senior years. That away we can still be happy as we get older and not fall into a deep depression as it has been stated that 35 million seniors 65 and older only 7 million suffer from some form of depression. It has also been stated that depression in the elderly is under-organized and under treated. Which if you really think about it is not good. Just because seniors have lived along life and what not does not mean that it should go under treated, they are still a human beings that need help just like the younger generation.
