The recent hate crime in Overland Park, Kansas has proven that there deranged individuals who will harm others because of their ethnic backgrounds. These people are walking time bombs, with some of them suffering severe mental problems, yet they are able to obtain weapons and kill at a moment’s notice. It’s hard to stop some of these attacks especially if such a person does not bring attention to themselves and doesn’t have a criminal history. But what about the ones that authorities know about, should action be taken to keep that person under surveillance, or do you just let them go about their business until they actually kill someone?
Frazier Glenn Cross (Miller) was a person authorities knew about for a long time. He was an ex Army veteran who in 1980 was the Grand Dragon in a chapter of the Klu-Klux-Klan. After leaving the group, he started his own organization known as the White Patriot Party, and ran a Neo-Nazi website that constantly called for genocide against the Jewish community. In 1987 he was the subject of a nationwide manhunt for violating his bond requirements while appealing his conviction of starting a paramilitary organization. When he was finally captured, he was in a trailer with two other men along with grenades, automatic weapons, and thousands of rounds of ammunition.
He lived in Aurora, Missouri which is 180 miles from Overland Park, in a house that was surrounded on three side with barbed wire. That alone should have made the authorities sit up and take notice. And given his background, he should have been considered a serious threat. But apparently no one did, and he was able to leave Aurora, drive the 180 miles to Overland Park, armed, and take three lives. As he approached his victims, he asked them if they were Jewish before he fired the gun. In my opinion, he should have been seen monitored at all times. Now I know the first thing that’s going to be said is that there was not enough resources to do such a thing due to budget cuts. I understand that we don’t have the money to chase “wild geese”, but this guy had proven to be a danger to the Jewish community since 1980, and therefore warranted watching.
The American people are always complaining about the NSA collecting private information and that their rights are being violated, but in some cases, I feel that it could ultimately protect us from someone with nothing but death and destruction on their minds, domestic and otherwise.
