COMMENTARY | One has to hand it to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. He has stumbled upon a unique way to spin all of the horror stories about Obamacare, of the millions of people bereft of health coverage and then placed at risk of their lives. He denies it is happening.
Reid took to the senate floor and started raving, in his quiet manner, about how each and every one of the horror stories, of the cancer patients cut off from life saving treatments, of the children who suddenly can’t see their specialists, of the nightmare aggravation of navigating the byzantine bureaucracy of Obamacare, have all been made up. It is all just a lie concocted by the Koch brothers, the modern day equivalent of Emmanuel Goldstein.
There are two ways to regard Reid’s outburst.
If one is to imagine that he actually believes what he is saying. In that instance he needs to resign from the Senate and go somewhere where he can no longer harm himself or others. People who are that delusional do not need to be in public life nor occupy offices of trust. Next thing you know, he will be muttering about how the Republicans have stolen his strawberries and will be seen clicking those steel balls together
If on the other hand, if one imagines that Reid is taking a page from the book of Joseph Goebbels and is employing the tried and true tactic of the big lie, hoping that enough low information voters will buy it, then the senate Democratic caucus needs to remove him from the majority leadership. The continued Democratic majority is very much in doubt regardless. Senate Democrats had better start thinking about whom they want to lead them in the wilderness. And please don’t say Senator Chuck Schumer. The Democrats need to find someone whose chief quality is not being obnoxious.
Some senior Democrat is going to have to publicly declare what most people already know. Obamacare is worse than an atrocity. It is a mistake. Accepting that fact will be the first step on fixing the problem and repairing fortunes of a once great party. Otherwise the Democrats will deserve to wander out of power for at least the next generation.
