After bringing back the “Alien” franchise with the prequel “Prometheus,” Ridley Scott has announced that he is returning to another of his classic sci-fi franchises. Scott will direct a new “Blade Runner” movie, a sequel to his 1982 classic. Widely considered one of the finest science fiction films of all time, “Blade Runner” starred Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard as a cop known as a Blade Runner, a man whose job it was to hunt down Replicants.
Replicants, in the “Blade Runner” world, were humanoid androids created to complete menial tasks for humans. When they rebelled and fought for their rights, they were banished to work in outer space. Whenever some returned to earth, Blade Runners were sent after them to either eliminate them or send them back. Not only is Scott returning for another chapter to the “Blade Runner” story, but he wants Harrison Ford back as well. Ford has not accepted yet, but if he does, it will be another franchise added to his already lengthy career.
The movie that really gave Harrison Ford his big break was “Star Wars.” In that movie, Ford starred as Han Solo, the smuggler who ends up stuck in the middle of the war between the evil Empire and the rebellion. While Luke Skywalker was the main hero of the franchise, Han Solo was the most popular hero in the films. Ford wanted his character to die in “Return of the Jedi,” but his popularity with fans kept him alive. Now, in 2015, Ford will return to the role of Han Solo for the seventh film in the franchise series.
While Han Solo was Ford’s breakout role, Indiana Jones was his most popular over time. Ford has starred in four different movies as Indiana Jones, starting with “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and continuing to “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” in 2008. At the age of 72, it seems like Ford might be too old to continue to play the adventurer, but he seems to disagree. One of the stipulations of returning to “Star Wars: Episode VII” was for Disney to agree to make more Indiana Jones movies.
While nowhere near as popular as his other franchise roles, Ford also starred as Tom Clancy hero Jack Ryan. While Alec Baldwin played the role first, Ford took over with “Patriot Games” and remains the most iconic version of Ryan in movies. He played Ryan one more time in “Clear and Present Danger” and was supposed to continue on, but logistics with the franchise got in the way and they rebooted it with Ben Affleck, and then once again with Chris Pine.
