When Halle Berry referred to her delivery of son Maceo, at 47, as the conclusion of a “geriatric pregnancy,” she certainly got people’s attention. Maceo is her first child with husband Oliver Martinez. Her 5-year-old daughter, Nahla (with model Gabriel Aubry) was born when Berry was 41.
The ever fabulous Berry may be elderly by maternal clock standards, but she’s full of youthful ferocity in “X-Men Days of Future Past,” where she reprises the role of Storm, mistress of the atmosphere.
Berry’s a product of her time, carrying the torch for a generation of women who delayed having children until their late 30s and 40s. According to the CDC, this trend started way back in the ’70s, and the percentage of women having their first child after age 34 has increased steadily ever since.
Check out these other actresses who had children in their forties.
Salma Hayek – the Latin beauty gave birth to her first and only child, daughter Valentina Paloma Pinault in 2007 at the age of 41. Little Valentina’s father is businessman Francois Henri Pinault. Asked about her delayed motherhood, Hayek replied, “I believe that change keeps you young. I’m a late bloomer; I always have been.”
Uma Thurman – the “Pulp Fiction” star welcomed her third child, daughter Rosalind Arusha Arkadina Altalune Florence in 2012 when she was 42. When Jimmy Fallon asked her why the little one has so many names, she cited her older daughter Maya (then 14).
“[Maya] came up with the best excuse; that I probably wouldn’t get to have any more children, so I just put every name that I liked into [the baby’s name].”
Thurman had Maya and her brother Levon, who’s three years younger, with ex-husband Ethan Hawke. Baby Rosalind’s daddy is Elle McPherson’s ex, financier Arpad Busson.
Mira Sorvino – the “Falling Skies” actress delivered her fourth child with husband and fellow actor Christopher Backus (14 years her junior – you go girl!) in 2012 when she was 44. The little girl named Lucia joined older sister Mattea (born in 2004), brother Johnny (born in 2006), and brother Holden who was born in 2009 when Sorvino was 41.
When Lucia was two months old, her mother reflected on the challenges of raising a brood of four in Hollywood. “They are growing up with a bit of a silver spoon, just because of [our] lifestyles as actors, “she noted, “and I’m always trying to keep them grounded and teach them to be good people who are actively helping others.”
