There are a lot of ways people can save money, but trying to cut your own hair shouldn’t be one of those ways. I made this terrible mistake, and it ended up costing me quite a bit–both emotionally and in cash–as a result.
My wife and I have a huge German shepherd named Roger. As a way to save money, I bought some dog clippers and started grooming Roger myself instead of paying someone else to do the deed.
Well, this worked so well for the dog that I decided to try to cut my own hair, too! I was such a cheapskate that I even used Roger’s dog clippers instead of buying human clippers.
Things were going well enough at first, but then I went way too low on part of my head. Then, I tried to even things out, and let’s just say it didn’t work out as planned. Before I knew it, I had hair of all different lengths, and it was a sight to see! Anyone could see that I had no idea what I was doing.
I completely panicked and realized how stupid I had been to try to cut my own hair. I didn’t even ask my wife for help; I just dove in and did it on my own.
What was I thinking? I still don’t have a good answer for this.
By this point, my hair was an uneven, scary mess. So, I hightailed to my local barber, but he had a line a mile long and he couldn’t get me in.
That meant my only option was to go to my town’s local beauty salon. Talk about an embarrassing situation.
The salon girl was able to get me in right away, and she was able to spruce up the mess on top of my head. She ended up costing quite a bit more than my barber, though, and my hair was way shorter than I ever wanted.
So, I ended up having short hair and having to spend even more than if I would’ve just gone to the barber in the first place. I had really screwed up and felt so dumb.
Nowadays, I still cut my dog Roger’s hair, but I let other people cut my hair. I definitely learned from my mistake.
Even though I don’t save money by cutting my own hair, I did find out a neat tip from a friend who heard my horror story. My friend suggested I call my local cosmetology school, and they may have extremely cheap haircut rates.
So, I called, and sure enough-they have $1 haircuts every Wednesday!
Ever since my hair nightmare, I’ve gone to this school and had pretty decent haircuts from the students.
That’s the one tip I have for anyone interested in cutting their own hair: Just pay the $1 and have a student cut it instead. It’ll save you a lot of embarrassment and cash in the long run.
