There is nothing like leaving work and having a good beer in a nice hole-in-the-wall bar. In Pittsburgh, PA, this staple of blue collar life is tradition nearly as old as the city itself. You can find dive bars in almost every district of the city. Some are small, smoky rooms with just a single bar, while others are sprawling affairs that cater to the nearby college students. With all of these options, Pittsburgh is a great place to get a drink and maybe a bite of food alone or with friends. If you are in the city for any reason, try one of the following best dive bars in Pittsburgh.
Fuel & Fuddle – Conveniently located in Oakland, this popular bar caters primarily to the thousands of students from the nearby University of Pittsburgh. It is particularly famous for its greasy but delicious menu that is half price after 11PM. Lines usually start forming every night at about 10:30 just to enjoy the fare here. But don’t just come here for food. Fuel & Fuddle has a full bar that even features two unique craft beers that can’t be found anywhere else. Whether you prefer a dark brown lager or a pale ale, make sure to order at least one of these beers when you visit.
Bloomfield Bridge Tavern – Also known as the Polish Party House, this bar serves some of the best Polish cuisine in the city. It has award winning pierogies, golabki, kielbasa, and more. You can enjoy live music on the weekends while drinking some of your favorite beers and lagers. Bloomfield Tavern tends to serve local favorites like Yeungling and Guinness. The Liberty Avenue location is a little off the beaten path, but easily reached by bus most any time of day or night.
Mad Mex – Mad Mex is loud, dark, and cramped, everything you want from a good dive bar. The bar itself has table room for about 50, though you are bumping elbow at even about half of that. Like many bars in Oakland, it serves half price late night meals, which tends to lead to up to hour long lines waiting to get in. The food is excellent traditional Mexican food and the full service bar has just about type of hard alcohol you could ever ask for, as well as an enormous selection of beers. When you come here, take advantage of the opportunity to get some of the best margaritas and sangria available in the city.
31st Street Pub – If rock and roll is your thing, there is absolutely no better bar in the city to get your fix. This dive bar is decorated from floor to ceiling with band paraphernalia. The music you find here is almost always live and bands are expected to play their original songs, rather than play covers. It is a statement about how intensely this bar is dedicated to the music that its website is entirely devoted to information about bands and doesn’t even mention the beer selection. That said, the selection is good, and most importantly cheap. Located on the edge of the strip district, it isn’t in easy walking range of most residential areas, but is easily reached by bus and has lots of nearby parking. If you like to drink in quiet this is not the bar for you. But if you want a rocking good time, this pub is where you’ll find it.
