Memorial Day is both a day of remembrance for the lives of U.S. servicemen and women who lost in armed conflict as well as the unofficial start of summer. San Diego, being a military town, has many activities and events related to paying respects and memorializing those who served this upcoming Memorial Day. Also, being an area with mild weather, there are also many activities related to the start of summer for that same weekend. Here are a few things that will be happening during the 2014 Memorial Day weekend. Some events may require an admission fee.
Start out the weekend with a memorial on May 24th with a veterans’ wreath laying ceremony on the U.S.S. Midway at 9 a.m. There will be military flyovers and a special wreath laying discovery zone for young people. Throughout the weekend, there will be bands, crafts, and educational activities for all ages. This will be a great event for families with real-life veterans to talk to and hear from and military aircraft. The U.S.S. Midway Museum is located on the Midway which is docked at Navy Pier. Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery will have its annual veterans’ memorial service on Monday, May 26th at 10 a.m. On Saturday, the Boy Scouts will be placing flags at each of the grave plots. The cemetery is located at 1880 Cabrillo Memorial Drive in the Point Loma area just north of the Cabrillo Monument.
After the memorial services, San Diego has many activities to offer for Memorial Day weekend. There are several activities at Balboa Park going on throughout Monday, May 26th beginning at 9:30 a.m. with an audio tour which can be rented at the visitor’s center. Most other events and museums open at 10 a.m. and will end at about 5 p.m. There will be a puppet show for kids at the Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theater at 11 a.m. and several films about ocean life at the Ruben H. Fleet Space Center and San Diego Natural History Museum also beginning at 11 a.m.
All city parks are open during Memorial Day for barbecues and outdoor activities. Weather is expected to be sunny and mild. For all events, be sure to arrive early and be courteous. Expect these events to be crowded and parking may be difficult at peak times.
