“If God did not intend for us to eat animals, then why did he make them out of meat?”-John Cleese. For a person who likes to eat chicken, it used to be hard to find good meat shops in Bangalore North as it’s one of those areas which have high Brahmin population in Bangalore. Times have changed and people from various parts of the country come down to Bangalore to make a living, people with different palates who do not like to have lemon rice for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Even today it’s very difficult to find good pork or a beef shop in India. I’ve listed out few butcher stores in Bangalore North (Rajajinagar and Yeshwantpur).
- Metro Cash & Carry: Metro located about half a kilometer from Yeshwantpur Bus stand is one of the biggest wholesale stores in Bangalore. You get everything in Metro from snickers to a vacuum cleaner. They have a huge parking area so that you can take your monthly grocery back in your car. They also have two wheeler parking. Now, let’s get down to business. Metro has one of the cleanest meat sections I’ve ever seen. They get fresh sea food every day and they display it on their table. A table dedicated to every type of sea food displayed on chunk of ice. They also have a frozen section where you get squid rings, prawns and other stuff. Chicken you can either buy the whole thing or any portion like the breast, legs, etc. They have it all packed. It’s stored in cold conditions. They also offer red meat namely beef, pork and lamb. Again packed and kept in cold storage. You can also ask the butchers to cut the meat according to your requirement. The meat there is good and moderately priced. The only drawback of this store is that you need have a metro card. You have to be a retailer to get this card or any retailer can refer you. Here’s the address if you are keen on getting the card:Survey No. 26/3, Industrial Suburbs, “A” Block,Subramanyanagar Ward No. 9,Bengaluru.
- Big Bazaar: One of the biggest retail chains in India owned by future group is located right next to the famous Iskon Temple. It is one of the main competitors for metro which is located very close to Big Bazaar. Again has everything you need for your monthly grocery. The area is not as large is metro, the parking area is smaller. Meat-wise they don’t offer fresh sea food but yes they do have fish stored in freezers. They have displayed chicken and other meat. Well it’s a miniature compared to metro but for all those people who do not own a metro card, this is a good place. The ambience is similar to that of metro. Well, I couldn’t get the address but it’s close to Orion Mall so you’ll figure it out.
- Yeshwantpur Fish Market: For all those people who prefer to eat it fresh, like straight from the ocean, this is the place for you. You’ll see crates of fresh fish being brought in. The market has many shops. If you go to any of them they will be happy to clean the fish for you. The butchers cut the meat in front of you and viola you have the fish ready to be cooked. The ambiance is like a regular fish market, smelly. You can smell fresh fish everywhere. My grandfather once said that you must go to the shop where it’s crowded which means you get fresh fish there. That’s one piece of advice I would give importance. I don’t have the address but you can ask anyone on the road once you reach yeshwantpur. Try not to go on your car because you’ll have a hard time finding a place to park it.
I’ve covered the biggest butcher stores/places I know about in Rajajinagar area. You can get chicken anywhere around the corner of your home. But if you’re looking for clean red meat especially beef or pork, I feel metro or big bazaar is the place for you. Feel free to share your opinion.
