With the 21st overall selection of the 2014 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers selected HaHa Clinton-Dix. Desperately needing production from the safety position, the Packers have potentially discovered a gem in the former University of Alabama standout.
Clinton-Dix, who was, with little objection, the heart and soul of the Crimson Tide secondary during the latter portion of his Alabama career, comes to Green Bay with great technique, as well as a wealth of defensive knowledge courtesy of Tide defensive coordinator Kirby Smart and head coach Nick Saban.
Coming from a base 3-4 pro-style defense, Clinton-Dix should have relatively no issues in respect to adapting to Green Bay’s system.
At the culmination of the 2013 season, the Packers were the only team in the NFL who did not have an interception from the safety position. Clearly, in the case of the Packers, the first round selection of the highly touted Alabama product was based on need.
While not the fastest, or even the hardest hitting safety in the draft, Clinton-Dix is quite rangy, is a fundamentally sound tackler, has “ball hawking” instincts, and was groomed by arguably the best defensive mind in college football, Nick Saban.
Much like his former college teammate C.J. Mosley, Clinton-Dix is equipped with a very high football IQ. Green Bay’s newest edition is highly disciplined in respect to the flow of the game as well as various coverage assignments.
In 2013, the Packers hit a grand slam with the selection of Eddie Lacy, and early on, simply based on concerns within the secondary, and the intangibles that Clinton-Dix brings to the table, Green Bay probably couldn’t have asked for a better first round selection in 2014.
Taken one spot ahead of dual-threat quarterback Johnny Manziel, Clinton-Dix has the potential to be a great source of productivity for the Packers, especially when it comes to getting off the field on third-and-long situations.
Departing Alabama with two national championships, as well as an SEC title, Clinton-Dix knows how to win. Green Bay fans are obviously hoping that “HaHa” will help the Packers get the last laugh once the 2014 season comes to a close.
