Golf is one of those sports that unites folks of many ages. There is nothing more beautiful in sport than rustling through pine needles and acorns trying to retrieve a white ball, and finding it! Okay, so maybe the feeling of hitting a poor shot isn’t the greatest, but no one can deny that golf is a unique sport that has been designed to be played in the elements of nature.
For those of us who are getting older, the body begins to deteriorate and we can no longer do those things that we once did. Most sports played as a youth and young adult can no longer happen when one reaches the age of seniority. Golf is unique.
Go onto any golf course in the United States and you are sure to see someone over the age of 65 hitting balls at the driving range, or on the fairways and greens taking in a round of golf. Just look at the legendary golfer, Arnold Palmer, who still hits balls at the age of 84.
Golf is one of those sports that is calm and meant for a fine day with friends, or even alone if one wants. It doesn’t require a lot of torment on the joints of the body like other sports too often do; although that isn’t to say injuries don’t happen when playing the sport, they do.
But injury risks aside, golf happens to be a sport that one can enjoy playing as they age, body permitting. You don’t see seniors being able to enjoy full court basketball easily, or even something like softball as efficiently as golf.
Golf is a gentleman’s sport, regal enough to have the pleasure of hosting many seniors that participate in the great game. It is a timeless thing, catching fresh air as the sunshine beams down on your face while you swing a club against the whistling wind. Even when your round’s score may be extremely high, and your talent at the sport may be minimal, there is something majestic and fulfilling about playing golf.
Perhaps the greatest thing about the sport of golf is how inclusive it is; it is meant to be enjoyed long into life, never taking the fun away from those who participate in it. Go ahead and get out and play if you have the energy for it. The sport doesn’t have an age limit.
