I attend weekly park days with our south San Antonio homeschool group, BASH: Bexar/Atatscosa Secular Homeschoolers. This homeschool group goes to several different parks located in south Bexar and north Atascosa Counties so I have the opportunity to explore several of the area parks. Golden Park was truly a hidden gem that is tucked away in the middle of south San Antonio but has a very private, country feel to it. The list of amenities is sure to please all age groups and I highly recommend it for families looking for a place to have some family-friendly fun.
The play area at Golden Park was situated on a soft, rubber surface to mitigate dangerous falls and scrapes. There is something for all ages on the playscape. There are places to climb, places to hide, places to slide. There are plenty of places to crawl in and around. They have a balance beam that is a lot of fun for games and to hone balance. The monkey bars are lower than most you see, so the younger kids can get in on the action without fearing a fall from tall heights. There is also a stepping stone type structure where kids can climb and ply “King of the Mountain”. There are four big kid swings and two toddler swings available.
Older kids will enjoy the basket ball and baseball courts at Golden Park. Children of all ages will appreciate the wide open spaces to use for sports, imaginative play, Frisbee, ball playing, kite flying and whatever activities they might enjoy. The favorite feature of this park, though, was the walking trail with exercise equipment. This is perfect for adults who want to do some circuit training on the trail while the kids get to play. Everyone is still within sight but each age group can participate in activities suited to them.
There are several picnic areas, barbecue pits and a covered pavilion available. There are even several covered benches throughout the park. There is a water fountain and port-a-potty facilities. Unfortunately, there are no permanent restroom facilities, the only drawback to this park. However, the port-a-potties were exceptionally clean so obviously regularly monitored. Due to the proximity of the Air Force base, the kids got to see several planes flying overhead and quite near. While not exactly a feature of the park, the frequency of the flyovers and the detail of the planes that was easily seen was an area of fascination for the kids and adults in attendance.
Golden Park is highly recommended for all ages, including adults. It is located at 7801 Somerset Road in south San Antonio. There is ample parking and a clearly marked sign but you do have to drive into the park a ways so you will not easily see all the amenities from the street. For families looking to spend some time together in a fun venue, Golden Park is highly recommended.
