Going green can sometimes be an unwanted task. I can honestly say that there have been times when I let the recycling slip. But as I read more and more reports on the trash building up and taking up areas that are needing for wildlife; I try to do the best I can in order to be more green conscious in my house.
Skip the Bottled Water
I admit it; there have been times when I am in a hurry, I buy a bottle of water at the local gas station. Of course, I feel guilty after seeing the empty bottle on the floor board of my car. I suggest that you buy a refillable bottle to use on a daily basis. If you do not like the taste of your tap water, a filter can be installed. The savings will be found in both your pocket from not having to buy bottled water and in the lack of those empty containers in your recycling container.
Avoid Paper Towels For Cleaning
I have actually done well in this strategy to be green. I have given up on purchasing paper towels. I use cloth towels that I can rewash.
Forego the Plastic Bags
I am still working on this aspect of going green. When I am at home and planning my grocery shopping, I just grab my reusable tote bags and go to the store. My downfall is when I am on my way home from work or a visit with friends and I stop at the local supermarket. I usually do not have my reusable totes with me. I have been attempting to make a conscious effort that after I unload my groceries to place the tote bags by my door to take to my car the next time I leave the house.
When packing your lunch for work or your child’s lunch for school, forego the plastic bags and brown paper bags which I know are convenient. But instead invest in containers that can be used to store sandwiches, small snacks and any other food item that you take with you. Sometimes these containers come free with the purchase of a reusable lunch tote which is another plus for going green.
Install Energy Efficient Light Bulbs
Take a day and replace all the light bulbs in your house with the ones that are energy efficient. The energy efficient bulbs will help green your house and save you money.
These are only a few tips that can help in order to go green in your house. There are many others out there that can be researched.
