All fan boys will recognize this little conversational exchange in the movie “Avengers” between Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg), “Oh i got Stark, you’ve got the BIG guy”. When that was said by Agent Coulson we all knew that he was referring to the Hulk played by Mark Ruffalo. But when it comes down to it Movie geeks and Comic book guys will only have one Big Guy in mind, He might not be so green despite some of his origins being reptilian but he has an equal reputation regarding anger that might even cause the hulk to run in terror. I am talking about the King of monsters, Godzilla.
Godzilla, or as the original movie states “Gojira”, is considered by most sci-fi fans as the King of Monsters. So it is without wonder that up until this time people seem to have an endless love affair with the big bad beast. On May 16th that romance will be tested, as the new Godzilla movie threatens to stomp theaters.
THE KING HAS RETURNED
So far the reaction from hardcore fans have been positive regarding teasers, trailers, and panels done on certain events, as the Director Gareth Edwards’ approach will be to, erase, so to speak, the bad taste left behind by the 1998 version. Zilla, the mutated iguana version of Godzilla was in a sense a financial success but left a really bad impression on hardcore fans, leaving them desiring for a better western take on an eastern classic. In most interviews he has done for the past months Edwards has reiterated that the tone for this movie will be ‘serious’, as he really wants to bring out the monster within. In Zilla’s outing it was more targeted for a wider range of audience bordering to becoming comical. This time, Edwards wants to reinvent this icon, and judging from all the promotional material they are bringing out, it is a step in the right direction.
EPICNESS OR BUST
A lot of Godzilla fans are as hungry as the big daddy himself for a revision of this legendary ‘kaiju’ that will not leave them wanting to close the book on western version but hungry for more pure unadulterated monster brawl that we all have come to love from Toho’s Godzilla movies. With the addition of new monsters to challenge the beast, this movie just might take the biggest bite out of the box office this May.
