Growing up in central New Jersey, the berm at the edge of the mall was our closest thing to a campground. Having moved to Pennsylvania, I experienced a dramatic increase in naturel. Allentown is fortunate enough to have some wonderful campground experiences nearby that anyone with a mind for adventure would love to experience.
Allentown Kampground of America (KOA)
More of a camping resort than a campground, Kampgrounds of America is a great family oriented place to make a retreat. A forty acre swath of beautiful forest in New Tripoli, there are areas for recreational vehicle, cabin, or traditional tent camping available for short or extended stays. A basic tent site will cost about $30 a day, depending on whether you want an individual water and electrical hookup. You’ll find a variety of activities around the camp, from pavilions and a pool to fishing and biking. Scouting and hiking are the primary way to see the sites, and the natural beauty of the place combined with its accessibility make KOA a great way to relax if you’re in the area.
Little Red Barn Campgrounds
Not to far away, in Bucks county, lies the Little Red Barn campground, a family run campground with about 150 tent sites. It’s a little more expensive than the KOA at $35 a night but does have great rates for longer term stays, including trailer sites. All the regular outdoor activities are here, from volley and horseshoes to basketball courts and a game room there’s a wide variety of gaming-like things to do. The hiking trails are not as extensive as those at the KOA but it’s also very close to Philadelphia and is a great base for day trips to that fine city.
If you go a little further into Bucks county you can get to Quakerwoods on Rosedale road. This site is kind of a middle ground between the prior two, you can get a basic tent site with electric for $32. It’s the location of this campground that is key, it is in the woods right of central Bucks county and is close to New Hope, a great artistic town, and a variety of auction and antique sites. There is a beautiful central lake and set of pavilions on the grounds and the activities are structured by weekend. For example there’s a movie weekend, Father’s day weekend, and scavenger hunt weekend.
