“I drink because I like to … not because I have to … I am not an alcoholic,” the voice on the TV said.
It sounded as if the commercial had been filmed locally. No meal was served or event planned and executed without the appearance of his ‘mistress … Lady Alcohol’ but,
he claimed he did not have a drinking problem.
Adam was a hard working man that started drinking when he was young … a beer here and there at first. It progressed to a couple of beers after work, then to a six pack a day. ‘Hard’ liquor was the next new addition and it brought out a side of him that nobody could deal with at all. He was a mean drunk. His comments would have made Lenny Bruce blush and he was sensitive about responses. He developed a desire to fight … everybody.
Since he had a hangover when he went to work nearly every day, he couldn’t stand the muzak that came from the speaker over his desk. Meant to sooth the customers, it enraged the employee. One day, he went to the closet and got the broom to jab at the speaker until a coworker asked what he was doing. The resulting argument led to a near fist fight and a referral to Employee Assistance. Like lots of employers, his had programs designed to help employees to get off drugs and alcohol without risking their jobs.
His employer could not fire him for alcoholism and the program gave him some much needed treatment. He had to attend AA (alcoholics anonymous), the family was referred to Al A Non where they learned not to ‘enable’ or accept the destructive behaviors Adam had developed.
He has been sober for two years now.
