It’s almost summer and that means its time to break out the shorts, skirts and capris. But what if your legs aren’t quite beach ready? As a beauty fanatic and fashion expert, I have created and picked up many tips and tricks on how to get the best beach legs possible. Follow my guide on how to get silky smooth legs at home this summer.
Use Quality Tools
Using quality tools, like fresh razor blades and good quality wax, is critical to getting a smooth leg. Sharper blades mean a closer shave and mean you don’t have to go over multiple areas. My favorite razors are almost always men’s razors, because the blades tend to be sharper and pivot better than women’s razors. I recommend using a women’s shaving cream or gel that has extra moisture or that is scent free. Many creams or gels that contain fragrance can irritate legs and cause redness or bumps. A quality razor doesn’t have to be expensive, but it should be sharp and have more than one blade for the closest shave possible.
If using a wax, pick one that is easy to apply. I prefer cold wax that is already on strips and is easy to apply. Warm wax you heat on the stove or in the microwave can be effective, but you can risk burns or irritation if applied incorrectly. Strips that are prepared with the product take out the guess work and can reduce the risk of damaging your skin.
Moisturize Your Legs
Moisturizing your legs is extremely important for achieving that summer glow. You should focus on moisturizing your legs with a thick body butter or cream every day, or at least every other day, leading up to the summer. As it begins to warm up, switch to a light weight lotion and apply twice a day. The kind I have found work best are unscented lotions, because they don’t risk causing breakouts or as much irritation as many regular scented lotions can.
Moisturizing is especially critical after you shave or wax. Once you’re out of the shower, gently pat your legs dry. Rubbing with a towel can cause your legs to lose a lot of their natural oil and moisture and that means you have to add even more lotion. Once they’re dry, immediately apply lotion. If your skin is warm, it can absorb the moisture better. Layering the lotion on when the skin has been possibly irritated by a razor can also help it calm and prevent bumps or burns. After waxing, use a light moisturizer and apply a thicker moisturizer later in the day.
Exfoliating means you’re taking off the dead, dry skin cells that sit on top of fresh skin. It sounds gross, but everyone has them and its easy to get rid of them. Choose an exfoliating scrub and use it at least twice a week, but more often if you have dry skin or live in a dry climate. If you don’t want to buy a scrub, mix together 1 cup of sugar and a half cup of olive oil and any essential oils you like. Slather onto your skin and rub, then rinse, to get rid of all the dead skin and start moisturizing a fresh layer of skin.
Protect from The Sun
Protecting your legs from sun exposure is very important to smooth skin. Sunburns mean you’re probably not going to be shaving or wanting to show off your legs any time soon. It also means you’re permanently damaging your skin. Use at least an SPF 30 when you go out in the sun and avoid tanning beds. You can easily achieve a natural glow with a self tanning product like a lotion. I like using self tanners that gradually increase as you use them, so you can only get as much color as you need. It can be tempting to hop in a tanning bed but your legs will thank you for your kindness.
In no time, you’ll be ready to hit the beach or just wear your favorite short skirt and dresses. Ideally, you want to start these habits in the early winter, but with diligence and a little tweaking here and there you can get your legs summer ready in just a matter of weeks. The hardest part will be picking new summer outfits to match your sexy, silky legs.
