Insurance prices can vary from state to state. It’s very important to do your homework to find the best policy for you and your family.
Almost all states require that you have at least PLPD basic insurance. This means that you are covered for personal liability and property damage. However, if your car were totaled, you would not be paid for the car unless you take the mini tort route. Many people with older cars use the PLPD insurance.
Many of us like to have full coverage insurance as it eases our minds. This includes Collision coverage and Comprehensive coverage.
The collision coverage pays to repair or replace your car after there is an accident. This is good to have with a $500 or a $1000.00 deductible if you can afford it.
The Personal Property Protection insurance, also just called PIP, pays all reasonable and necessary medical expenses if you are hurt in an accident.
The comprehensive coverage will pay out if your car is stolen or damaged by water, rocks or other things like that.
According to CNNMoney, the higher the deductible, the less your policy will be. I have found this to be true for the last 35 years or so.
You can find out more about car insurance from your state insurance information website.
From past experience, I have always visited the Independent insurance agencies because they have more options. They can check many different companies for you to see who is the cheapest and they can compare coverage to get the best policy for you. You can stop into any agency and get a printed quote. The quotes they give you are based on several factors, so make sure you tell them everything. This includes any accidents you have had in the last few years. If you don’t give that information, then your quote may not be accurate. Also make sure to let them know how many miles you drive to work because if you don’t travel far, you may get a discount.
There are discounts for many things. Make sure you ask about those. Some companies have discounts for belonging to a Credit Union or being a non-drinker. Don’t forget about the safety discounts. If you insure more than one car, you can get the multi-policy discounts also.
You can get quotes from anywhere, but I like being able to go into my local insurance office. I prefer this instead of doing everything online.
So take your time and check around to get the best policy for you.
