The real gender situation in Cambodia might not worst, but it is so bad. One girl told me about her story. She was crying all day lone because of love. She told me that: “my boy friend and I are in love in 2012, but his parents are Chinese, they never like me because I am a Cambodian. I have brown skin, but my boy friend has white skin. His parents always said bad words to me even his sister hates me so much.” I asked her: “still you are in love with him?” her answered: “yes, because we love each other so much, but we can not get married until today and maybe go on. I am waiting for the day that his parents feel good with me and accept me.” I asked a question again: “do you think it is fair or not when his parents just hate you in case of gender inequality?” her answered: “I wish to live in other countries like USA or UK when I can find the equally between man and woman. Here in Cambodia, I feel so bad when they look down on me because I am just a female. My boy friend is living in the USA; he promised me that, we are going to live there when he got the citizen of America. Everyday I pray to god to help us walk through this sadness love story. You know his sister hate me so much because I am poor. She always called a devil since I never did anything bad toward. I wish that one day she can understand about our love and stop saying bad words to me. His family are businesses people, they never study about gender, the are living under the Chinese rules or Cambodian slogan (man is gold, woman is white cloth).’ My question again: ” so, do you really want to have gender equality in Cambodia?” her answered: “I am not so sure about that because sometimes, I see the girls on the road outside of my home doing some bad activities like kissing or hugging in the public. For Cambodian women, virginity is the most important thing for us to protect until we get married. I think it is not fair if those girls lost their virginity and they are in virgin rank. Whatsoever, I think that life is life, we should not care so much about virginity, but my parents always care about and surely I protect it until now.” I asked: “how did you boy friend reaction toward his family while they are hating someone he loves?” she said: “that was so bad, you know, he rarely stay at home, I meant that he stayed for a few hours and he came to meet me. Sometimes, we feel like we are doing crime because those people do not want us to stay or to love each other”
May god help them, Cambodian and Chinese traditional rule are playing role in Cambodia society today. It is a bit funny in the time of 2014 that love is like a crime. She can not do anything beside praying to the god to save their love.
