Movies are a primary form of entertainment and some companies decide to take this a step further and create video games based on those movies. This article is going to discuss my top 10 video games which are based on movies.
1. Star Wars – The Old Republic
The Star Wars trilogy is timeless, in a galaxy far far away, with its story line, huge audience and the characteristics of an epic adventure.
The main aspect of this game that puts it ahead of the others is the fact that this game is online. In an online universe, you can easily find yourself immersed in the grand scale of things, making the universe and the planets feel more realistic.
The greatest thing about The Old Republic is that it can be a completely free to play game if you don’t mind the limitations set. You can experience playing through an intricate story line, influenced by your decisions and it is your choice to follow the light side of the force or be swayed to the hate and anger of the dark side.
The in-game interface is very customizable and gives you everything the way you want it, making the game very appealing to play. The key bindings can be easily changed to allow anyone to play it comfortably and match any previous games they are used to playing. Here is just an example of the quality cinematic you will experience.
2. Tron – FLTron
Tron is a classic game that used to be played quite regularly and was known as the 2D line driving game. The objective is to try to cause your opponents to run into your line and the idea was taken from the 1982 film of the same name. FLTron is completely free of charge and doesn’t offer any in-game purchases of any kind. FLTron is a new spin on the old 2D line driving game where, instead of playing against the computer, you are facing other players online. This offers a new experience for players, making it highly popular when it was first created. The game can have up to 8 players per zone that battle it out either in teams or solo to find the victor of that round. There are no hardware specifications required to play this game as it can be played on any browser by going here. The quality and management of this game is very well kept with dedicated servers for all Tron players. There are language filters and blocking abilities to allow you to enjoy your game. Here is a video of some FLTron game play.
3. Dragon Ball Z – Budokai 3
Dragon Ball Z first started out as a TV cartoon for kids and, due to its success, movies and games were created around the Dragon Ball Z universe. Budokai 3 is the 3rd in a series of Budokai games where the player takes a 3rd person perspective of the character they have chosen and then fight it out, either online or against a local friend. The game also includes a story mode and tournament features against the computer.
The price for Budokai 3 has gone down since release but is still quite expensive. It can be found for $80 on Amazon here but you could look around online for a better deal.
The controls are different from the previous Budokai games and the interface has some slight changes but, overall, it is pretty simple and easy to understand.
The look of the animation and characters has been made a lot sharper, giving the game a nice feel. The arenas now have multiple layers where characters can be punched into outer space or even into buildings where the fights can continue. The overall quality is very good and I would say it has greatly improved from the previous games.
4. Riddick – Escape from Butcher Bay
The player gets to take the role of the main character, Riddick, when he is captured in Butcher Bay. The player can play the game in either first person or third person views. The game matches the movie’s setting and characters but veers from the main story quite a lot in parts but results in the same conclusion.
This game can be found for around $12 on Amazon here.
The cut scenes in this game are very good and help keep the story flowing. For this generation of games, the graphics are high quality and, at its release, achieved a large amount of prestige. The implementation of stealth and action made the overall experience of playing this game enjoyable.
This Ghostbusters game features a unique story and begins when you, the player, become a brand new member of the team. The original sound track has been implemented into this great game, giving it the feel of the movies. The game has many different challenging aspects like capturing a ghost but this becomes part of the fun with the game.
The overall quality of this game is good and the creators definitely did the movies justice with this game. This game seems almost good enough to be the third movie as it has the same characters, villains and even has the original sound track to help it through.
6. Lord of the Rings – Return of the King
Lord of the Rings – Return of the King allowed you to play many of the characters in the movie and had a co-op feature allowing you to play alongside one of your friends throughout the adventure. Skills were upgradeable and there were many customizable features to help certain play styles.
The game is mainly a hack and slash adventure where you are tapping buttons and trying to pull off certain combos. The interface and controls flow really well and match the game’s theme.
The overall quality of the game is pretty decent. The creators managed to stick to the story line very precisely and added extra features and surprises along the way. During this generation of games, it was one of the best co-op games available and was highly entertaining.
The Lord of the Ring – Return of the King game highly varies in price between $10 and $40 here.
7. Spider Man 2
There are a number of Spider-Man games that have been released over the years but one that still hasn’t been matched is the original Spider-Man 2 game. This game provided a very good outlook on the way Spider-Man would roam the city and save people. The recreated New York City was free roam for you to go on your spidey adventures wherever you wanted.
The game featured a recreation of New York City and allowed you to play the plot from the movie. The game also included extra missions in the game where you could take on other Marvel characters such as Black Cat, Mysterio and the Shocker.
The game had no real disadvantages in itself and was a lot better than the previous Spider-Man game which was very poorly created. Sometimes, the missions were harder to find than others but this just gave you more time to explore.
8. Harry Potter – Order of the Phoenix
Harry Potter has become many children’s fantasy with the wondrous world of magic and wizards. It was only a matter of time until a Harry Potter game was released to allow players to take on their role at Hogwarts and cast their own magic.
The price for this game currently stands at around $25 on Amazon here but may be found for much cheaper when searching around.
This game features a complete Hogwarts castle and school grounds that can be fully searched; this feature was made very well and rewarded the player for finding things.
Another feature offered is using the Wii remote to be your virtual wand to cast magic. When using the Wii remote to cast spells, there can be some response issues and trouble getting spells right the first time. This doesn’t hurt the game too much though as it is still very occupying and keeps the attention of the player and allows it to remain fun.
9. The Matrix – Enter the Matrix
The game has many interesting features but the main reason I’d suggest playing this game is for the movie sequences. If you are a huge fan of the movies, then the cut scenes are definitely worth checking out. The overall game play is a lot less satisfying than the cut scenes would have you believe, though.
The role you take on mainly focuses on two side characters, Niobe and Ghost. I would have much preferred taking on the role of Neo and running around causing havoc in the Matrix. It seemed that the guards were too easy to take down and there wasn’t really any need to use “bullet time” all that often.
10. Indiana Jones – Revenge of the Ancients
The game was a new adventure for Indiana Jones; it used the movies as a basis but didn’t follow any particular story line from the movies. The game was difficult to play and not very responsive with the limited controls. The overall quality of this game was very poor to today’s standards. In 1987, when this game was released, however, it was quite popular. This is one of the earliest games that was adapted from a movie after its release.
