As you reach out to receive your high school diploma from your principal, your mind will start to wonder. What next? I just graduated high school and I am not sure what to do. Don’t worry I have an IDEA for you. My name is Mr. Davis, and I am a National Board Certified Career and Technology Education Teacher from Bel Air, Maryland.
For now, just pretend I am your favorite teacher who has important advice that could very well shape your future. I am here to provide you with four tips that will ensure your success after you walk off stage with your high school diploma. Here is my IDEA.
Invest your time in a passion
Do you remember dreading going to work as a high school senior? Do you want that feeling to continue for the rest of your life? If you answered no, then it is time to find a career that you can be passionate about. Think about something you want to do every day for the rest of your life. Start searching out careers that will provide you with most amount of happiness. Next, find and declare an academic major that relates to your career choice. You will be on your way.
Develop your network
How do you think you are going to land your first job after college? You were right if you answered, “through a friend or family member.” As a result, it is important that you befriend as many people as possible, and leave a positive, lasting impression. I received my first job out of college because of a positive endorsement from someone I graduated high school with, but never knew. Thanks Joe, I appreciate the help. I would not have been hired had I been mean to Joe in high school. Remember: Always be kind to others, and don’t ever burn any bridges. It could come back to haunt you.
Try new things. You might find a hidden passion that you never knew existed. It might just lead you to a career that you love. It worked for me. I am thankful to this day that I accepted Dr. Kimberly Lauffer’s offer to be her graduate teaching assistant at Towson University. I never thought of being an educator until I began this experience. I instantly fell in love with teaching and found my passion. You will find your passion through exploring the world around you, so enjoy.
Always Be Learning
Be a lifelong learner. More knowledge and skills lead to new abilities and opportunities. Be better tomorrow than you were today. This can be done by acquiring new knowledge. If you do this, you will find happiness and success in the future.
