Here is a summary of four events happening Memorial Day weekend, here in the La Crosse, WI area. Starting Saturday, May 24th there are plenty of activities to keep a person entertained until the Parade on Monday. Don’t miss out.
Historic Downtown Walking Tour
Starting on Saturday morning, 11:00am there will be a free tour of our historic downtown hosted by the Preservation Alliance of La Crosse (www.preservation-alliance.org). Guided by local University professor and historian, Barbara Kooiman, you will learn about the downtown area buildings, when and why they were built. If you enjoy La Crosse, it’s captivating downtown and want to know more about its architecture, then join Barbara, locals and other visitors as they meet at the corner of 2nd and Main Street and take a walk around town.
Barre Fest 2014
Head over to the La Crosse Fair Grounds in West Salem to attend the Annual Lions Club Fundraiser (www.barrecoedlions.com) for live music and events starting at 5:00pm on Saturday and 11:00am on Sunday. Tickets are only $5.00 at the door or $7.00 for a two-day concert ticket. There is a new Barre Fest Shuffle 5k run/walk starting at 8:30am on Saturday and there will be a Chicken-Q and a beanbag tournament for visitors on Sunday.
The Saturday music includes Altered Vision and Monkey Wrench starting at 5:00pm until 1:00am. And on Sunday, you can see Rewind Society, Maiden Dixie and Ship of Fools at 11:00am until 1:30pm. This is an event the whole family will enjoy. Be sure to come and support our local Lion Club.
La Crosse Speedway
The 2014 Memorial Day Lacrosse Speedway race (www.lacrossespeedway.com) is hosted by 1st Community Credit Union and offers a variety of races this year. The first race begins at 7:30pm Saturday the 24th and general admission is $12.00. Kids aged 11 and under get in free. Venue includes late models, sportsmen, Outlawz and Thunderstox. There will even be two new attractions for adults and children: street stock division and kids’ box car. This is a great way to spend some time Memorial Day weekend for all our Racing fans in La Crosse County; come and enjoy the people, cars, races and food.
And the Memorial Day Parade
To finish up La Crosse’s Memorial Day events, we have the annual Memorial Day Parade (www.cityoflacrosse.org) on Monday, May 26th. Starting at 9:00am on King Street and 6th Street, come and be a part of our city’s tribute to our nation’s men and women in uniform. The parade features members of our military base, Fort McCoy, local honoraries, and others who have served or are in the reserves. Making their way downtown from King Street, the parade finds its way to Riverside where there is a ceremony.
The Parade is followed by a Navy Reserve ceremony at Riverside and then concludes with a feast at the VFW. Enjoy spending this year’s Memorial Day with friends and family while honoring our soldiers and active reserves with these fun events the La Crosse area has to offer.
