It is common to not be able to sleep on occasions. However, if insomnia persists for weeks or even months, treatment is needed. Of course, medications are available, but home remedies work just as well. Here are a few home remedies below:
Sleep Aid Remedy #1
The roots of Valerian are used as a sedative and sleep aid. It increases the levels of GABA (gamma aminobutryic acid), which produces a calming effect. You can either drink it as tea, or take it in capsule form. If you take it in capsule form, make sure it is 30 minutes before bed. Valerian should not be taken in combination with other supplements or medications.
Sleep Aid Remedy #2
Melatonin helps to regulates the wake/sleep cycle. Just place the tablets under the tongue and allow it to dissolve. Take 0.25 to 0.3 mg, at bedtime. When taken regularly, you will be able to sleep, with no problem.
Sleep Aid Remedy #3
Magnesium helps maintain the function of GABA receptors. GABA promotes relaxation and helps you sleep better. Eat foods rich in magnesium, such as raw spinach, nuts, or fish. You can also take supplements.
Sleep Aid Remedy #4
Chamomile contains a substance known as apigenin. It binds to GABA receptors, which promote relaxation and causes sleepiness. You can buy chamomile tea from the store, or eat it plain.
