Selected in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints, safety Vinnie Sunseri has beaten the odds.
Sunseri, a critical part of Alabama’s 2012 national championship team, sustained a significant injury in late October of 2013. Tearing the ACL in his left knee, Sunseri underwent surgery and missed the remainder of the season.
An undeniable leader in the ‘Bama secondary, many fans and pundits assumed Sunseri would rehab his knee and return to the University of Alabama in 2014 for his senior season. However, in a rather surprising turn of events, the hard-hitting safety declared for the NFL Draft. The decision, questioned by the masses, prompted many fans and draft experts to wonder if Sunseri would even be selected.
The son of Florida State assistant coach Sal Sunseri, and the younger brother of former University of Pittsburgh quarterback Tino Sunseri, the former Alabama safety comes from a rather impressive football pedigree. In addition to the family’s knowledge of both the collegiate and professional game (business end) courtesy of Sal Sunseri’s impressive coaching resume, Vinnie Sunseri’s decision to leave Alabama was called into question even more.
However, as history now records, the player at the center of attention got the last laugh. With his aforementioned selection in the fifth round by the New Orleans Saints, Sunseri will now vie for playing time in the black and gold secondary this fall, and will do so with job security. Signing a four-year deal with the Saints, the young man who left school early will now be guaranteed a chance to fail, and that is nothing but a positive.
While one could still make the argument that Sunseri’s draft stock, as well as his financial reward, would likely have been much higher had he returned to Alabama for his senior season, as of now, the former Crimson Tide standout is in a quality situation. Sunseri is now in a position to earn his future, and that is all any athlete can ask for on a professional level.
