Nothing makes a woman curl her lip up more then seeing another woman with a drop dead gorgeous body showing it off with such pride. It used to be we would console ourselves that our husband loved us for who we are and that of course made us better then those shallow models. We even came out with a slogans;
” Real women have curves! “
” Curves are for real men bones are for dogs! “
This has of course backfired on us as we’ve been forcibly reminded that to tout these slogans is to put down all little girls who have no curves yet and may not develop any and women who are naturally skinny and striving hard to fit in. Recently a model singled out because of how skinny she was snapped back at people who questioned whether or not she was anorexic by saying ” Why is it ok to love your curves and it’s NOT ok for me to love my bones? “
Whoa we never meant that did we? Have we gone from one extreme to another? America is an obese over weight nation. Maybe trying to pretend we are not isn’t such a good idea because what’s really important to children? Their parents and being healthy. Most of the body image hype gets passed from parent to child.
If a daughter constantly sees her mother crying over how fat she is and giving in to diets and pills she will grow concerned about her own weight. With kids becoming obese at a young age this is a problem. On one hand we don’t want our child dying of an obesity related illness but on the other we don’t want to see them die from an eating disorder either.
So how do we find a balance? If we could shy away from the hate mongering, and yes touting your beautiful curves is hate mongering to those who don’t have curves at all because God made them different. If you’re going to accept yourself as you are then don’t make it about your weight. Just make it about you. Whether you have curves or bones doesn’t need to be a deciding factor at all since we are really trying to be ‘ beautiful as we are ‘.
This will actually take care of both sides of spectrum. If we worry about health and not beauty kids who grow up heavy will focus on loosing weight not because of what a scale says, but because of what their health metrics say. Skinny girls will not obsess over getting fat but focus instead healthy exercises geared towards increasing stamina and endurance. Neither one of the those groups will engage in unhealthy eating disorders because they will be striving to be as healthy as they can which would be defeated by giving into destructive behavior.
If this happens another factor will emerge. We will not be the fattest country in the world but that doesn’t mean everyone will have one type of body type. It’s easy to forget you can be overweight and healthy and you can also look like a walking skeleton and still be in top shape. None of us are made solely to look like everyone else. It is humanity that has shaped the body image hype right down to a science that has caused us to fail ourselves and our children.
It’s not too late however. There are a lot of families standing up to engage in healthy eating and healthy weight. Celebrities are starting to shun photoshopped photos and are touting what’s real. People who tout the slogan ” Love your curves! ” are starting to tout ” Love your body! ” With luck children growing up to these ideals will turn the tide and make our future one were everyone truly believes they are beautiful no matter their shape.
