William Shakespeare wrote “rose by any other name would smell as sweet,” but so would a jasmine, lily of the valley or a gardenia! It’s a scientific fact that flowers make people happier. Who doesn’t get a lift from receiving a congratulatory bouquet, or sending a thoughtful condolence arrangement, or just buying oneself a small spray of flowers to keep on a desk or counter? A scientific study published in Evolutionary Psychology Journal stated “the presence of flowers triggers happy emotions, heightens feelings of life satisfaction and affects social behavior in a positive manner far beyond what is normally believed. The Greater Phoenix area has a bounty of florist shops that can arrange and deliver these feel-good stems, buds and petals. In no particular order, here are four to try:
4032 N Miller Rd Suite 106, Scottsdale, 480-393-3644
Monday – Friday 9am – 4pm
The only thing more cheerful than the lush tropical arrangements located in this downtown Scottsdale shop’s bright open space is owner/designer Rachel Moiser. An artistic and enthusiastic woman with talented traditional flower arranging skills, her genius truly shines with the Southwest sunset colors of reds, pinks and oranges she employs when using Hawaiian ginger, protea, and bird of paradise. Mosier’s terrarium arrangements are a modern (and pollen-free) answer to a traditional arrangement, and Flora Unique’s use of hardy natural elements like sea shells, mahogany pods, rocks and succulents ensure these flowers aren’t thrown out in a few day’s times when the first petal falls.
FRESH CUT ROMANCE
4111 N. 44th Street, Phoenix, 602-955-0008
Monday – Friday 8am-5pm; Saturday, 8am – noon
Accolades constantly roll in for Fresh Cut Romance’s work — Phoenix Magazine awarded it Best of The Valley and The Knot made it a Best of Wedding winner, but owner Kevin Holt knows the real achievement is the oohs and ahhs of his happy customers who have been coming to his Central Phoenix store since 1988. Towering arrangements for black tie special events and multiple bridal party bouquets for elaborate weddings are no problem for this self-described “Mercedes” of a floral shop, but neither is lovely low-key $50 arrangement. Fresh Cut Romance’s website also provides a handy price point/flower arrangement chart so the buyer can do all the advance work and walk out with exactly what he or she wanted and expected!
LA PALOMA FLOWERS
13240 N. 7th Street, Phoenix, Suite #8, (602) 863-1515

The Moon Valley family-owned floral shop is set amongst one of the most residential areas of the sprawling Greater Phoenix area and has been in business for over three decades, both which contribute to the decidedly “neighborhood” feel to the shop. A rotating staff of four flower arrangers works with customers on a wide variety of seasonally appropriate arrangements. The store offers a standing weekly delivery option so one’s work, place of worship or kitchen table.
