With many diseases and sicknesses circulating and posing as possible threats to our well being and state of mind, one convenient and marketable solution for treatment or protection seems to be either a magic pill or vaccination. As a result we tend to over look natural remedies that may accomplish the task of being a possible treatment, and these remedies may even be less expensive, more effective, and less of a risk in using as opposed to medications. Depression has been an illness that has affected many people worldwide, and if left untreated can lead to more serious conditions such as obesity, heart disease, and stroke. Although popular antidepressants such as Prozac, and Lexapro are known for reducing effects of depression, there are more natural ways to approach the illness. Here are five ways to reduce depression in your life:
1. If you are a cigarette smoker then consider quitting
Many people are under the false impression that cigarettes may help them with their depression. Unfortunately, they fail to realize that the cigarette may subconsciously be calming their nerves but it’s actually affecting their neurotransmitters and altering them in a way that increases their risk of depression. According to the The British Journal of Psychiatry, Vol. 196, ” the evidence is consistent with the theory of a cause and effect relationship between smoking and depression.” Extensive research and a series of tests have been conducted and the outcome confirms that cigarette smoking is a factor in depression.
2. Eat more complex carbohydrates
Many health enthusiasts or gym freaks sometimes portrait carbohydrates as the number one cause of unwanted fat. They are correct to a certain extent, only if one was to over indulge and consume more than their necessary carbohydrate intake and if they were to eat excessive amounts of simple carbohydrates (for example cakes, chips, etc.). Complex carbohydrates on the other hand (such as fruits),can not only promote a healthier lifestyle, but they can increase serotonin levels in the body. Lack of serotonin can have a negative effect on your mood and increase the risk of depression. Some great carbohydrates to eat that will help fight depression are sweet potatoes, berries, and bananas.
3. Exercise more often
Exercise can encourage confidence and positivity and can generate an opposing effect towards depression. Engaging in an activity such as exercise causes the human body to release a chemical called endorphins. Endorphins are responsible for creating a feeling of excitement and happiness. Strenuous weight lifting or excessive fast paced workouts that will leave one staggering and gasping for air are not required to achieve an effect of euphoria produced by endorphins. Mild and moderate exercises such as running, walking, yoga, swimming, and biking will induce the same result.
Exploring new territories and engaging in a change of scenery might just be the answer for eliminating depression. Venturing into another environment can alleviate some mental burdens and dissipate some stress. Repeating the same routine and experiencing the mundane of society and life in general may promote unwanted stress and encourage symptoms of depression to consume ones physical and mental being. Traveling to alleviate symptoms of depression was even recommended by Robert Burton in 1621, in his encyclopedic doctrine The Anatomy of Melancholy.
5. Eat some turkey
Besides being an excellent source of lean protein, turkey is famously recognized for possessing a chemical called tryptophan. One might associate tryptophan with producing a feeling of sleepiness. However, tryptophan is connected with stimulating serotonin secretion.
Rather than pursuing the immediate urge to resort to pharmaceuticals to resolve a sickness, one should be aware of the possibilities of natural approaches to be a plausible remedy. Over consumption of prescription pills may lead to complications with internal organs, such as liver or kidney failure. Natural remedies are rarely classified as having negative effects towards ones condition. These natural approaches for combating depression will generally promote great health and might even transform one into a traveling fanatic and a lean mean turkey eating machine!
