If you are like me then after you’ve started eating and feeling better, the next step in your health routine may be to workout. While at-home workouts are a great start for exercising, millions of people choose working out at a gym to advance their health. If choosing to workout at a fitness establishment seems like the right fit for you, consider these five tips to make the most out of your time. After all, you are paying for it.
When you first start working out or want to get serious about your fitness the first step is to choose the right gym. There are tons of different specialty gyms like women’s only or 24 hour gyms. Choose a gym that offers exactly what you want and will need in your health progression. Ask plenty of questions like hours of operation and their optional offers before committing to a membership.
Pick The Right Outfit
When working out you want to choose clothes that are highly breathable and will work well with a large range of motion. For many people shorts and a t-shirt is the perfect workout outfit. Studies done in the last few years have found that the color of your clothes could also have an effect on your workout. According to a study from the University Of Essex, the color green lowered total mood disturbance while increasing the productivity and exertion compared to other colors like red or gray.
Say No To Ice
Everyone knows that during a sweaty workout drinking water helps you feel refreshed and replaces lost fluid, but drinking icy water or grabbing a cold drink from the machine may be a bad idea. Drinking a cold beverage has the dual effect of lowering your temperature and tightening your muscles. This makes weight loss more difficult and allows cramps to take hold easily leading to a more serious self-injury risk factor.
Mix It Up
If you’ve been hitting the gym, eating well, and doing every thing to specification you want to see results, right? According to my trainer, Anthony P. from 24 Hour Fitness, try to make sure to vary your routine to keep each part of your body adjusting. Doing the same workout, no matter how much you do it, will begin to lose effectiveness if you don’t give your body enough time to repair and build muscle between workouts. Try rotating each group of muscles you work out on certain days if you plan on spending a lot of time in the gym.
Pick The Right Companion
No, I’m not talking about your one true love who you want to spend your life with, I’m talking about who you workout with. If you exercise with a friend then the chances are you’re going to spend more time talking and distracting each other than actually working out. If you have to have someone to exercise with pick someone that will help you stay on task and motivate you instead of distract you, I usually choose my iPod. Also I’ve found that working out with a friend isn’t good, because If one of you stops the other will generally follow, usually before the end of your total workout.
Utilizing these tips could help you achieve better results during your time at the gym. If you’re serious about your workout it’s good to remember that in gym fitness, like many things in life, your only limited by your own inaction to work hard. Good luck in achieving your fitness goals!
