I know the feeling all too well; the one that wakes you from a sound sleep, or keeps you from getting to sleep at all. It’s that burning in your chest that creeps up into your throat and makes you want to do anything to ease the pain. I once had chronic heartburn so badly that I could only eat pudding and applesauce and drink ice water. Whether it’s basic heartburn or chronic gastroesophogeal reflux disease (GERD), you want relief and you want it fast. I’ve found some home remedies that really work.
It sounds crazy, but Reader’s Digest reports quite a few people swear that a teaspoon of yellow mustard stops heartburn in its tracks. Fancy gourmet mustards do not seem to work as well, so stick with the inexpensive store brands. If the first teaspoon doesn’t work, try a second.
Apple Cider Vinegar
While most people believe that heartburn is caused by excess stomach acid, that isn’t true. It’s caused when your stomach doesn’t have enough acid to digest your food, so it starts producing more. Add a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar instead of lemon to your tea, or just drink down a cup of cold water with a teaspoon or two of vinegar once a day and your heartburn will soon be a thing of the past.
Heartburn is a sign your body is out of balance. Believe it or not, acidic lemon juice has an alkalizing effect on your body. Drink a few glasses of water with a little lemon during the day, and heartburn just doesn’t have a chance. During an attack, drink the lemon juice in a glass of warm water.
According to studies reported in the New York Times, chewing gum relieves heartburn. It does so by flooding your stomach with alkaline saliva, thus neutralizing those pesky acids. The next time heartburn strikes, try chewing some peppermint gum, since peppermint is also a good digestive aid.
Eat Alkalizing Foods
Most heartburn is caused by acid foods such as caffeine, alcohol, spicy or fatty dishes. Eliminate acid-producing foods from your diet and you eliminate the cause of heartburn. Dr. Oz recommends eliminating these 25 acid-promoting foods and replacing them with his alkaline meal plan.
I know firsthand about how horrible GERD can be, so I hope one of these methods will help you the next time you have heartburn or gastric reflux. You don’t need expensive prescription drugs. Eating the right foods and keeping your body in balance can eliminate heartburn from your life once and for all.
