It’s good to clean the inside of your vehicle every now and then. Here are five tips for cleaning the interior of your vehicle.
1. Take everything out first.
When first cleaning the interior, take everything out that you can. This includes any garbage that you can pick up, CDs, phone chargers, loose change, and any detachable floor mats. Separate everything into three different piles. One pile for things you want to throw away, one pile of things you want to put back into your vehicle, and one pile of things you want to keep but not put back into your car. Taking out all of the loose items will make the rest of the cleaning easier.
2. Work from high to low.
You want to start from the highest point of your car, such as roof, sunroof (if you have one), visors, and dashboard. When you start cleaning these things you’ll knock dust and dirt down which will land on the floor. That’s why you should clean the bottom last. You may want to clean the outside of the car first before you start cleaning the inside as well.
3. Different cleaning products for different parts.
To have the best outcome you should use different cleaning products on the different surfaces. All of the glass and mirrors can be cleaned with window cleaner, such as Windex. There are many cleaners for sale specifically made for dashboards, such as Sonax Dashboard Cleaner. Do not use household cleaners or furniture polish as it could possibly strip the coating of the dashboard and ruin it. Many stores sell box sets which have different cleaners for all the different parts of a vehicle. It’s easiest to take a shop vac or dust buster to vacuum the bottom of the car. If there are any spills or spots that need a deep cleaning carpet shampoo works great.
4. Preventing future deep cleaning.
Although deep cleaning is good to do there are some things you can do to prevent major cleanups because of spills or other unforeseen accidents. To protect the steering wheel from fading from the sun and from collecting dust put a cover around it. You can easily buy a steering wheel cover for around $15. Some of them you can easily take off and spot clean while others can be thrown directly into a clothes washer. If you have pets they can leave quite the mess behind. You can easily buy a dog hammock to place onto the seats of the car so your pet is confined to one area. This will also collect dog hair so it won’t get all over the car.
5. Preparing for the season.
People usually will use their vehicle differently for the different seasons. For an example, in the Winter and Spring months there’s a higher chance of mud getting tracked into the vehicle because of the rain. This would be a good time to set some towels down on the floor so that the mud doesn’t stain the carpet. You can also keep an extra pair of shoes in your car so that you can change to clean shoes for driving. For Summer and warmer months it’s not uncommon for people to go on road trips. Road trips will usually generate a lot of garbage from snack bags, drinks, and other things. Have a plastic bag readily available for garbage so it doesn’t get stuffed anywhere around the car. In you plan on swimming make sure you either wait until you are completely dry or sit on a towel so you don’t ruin the material on the seats.
