Family portraits are special; they capture the essence of your family, as they are, in that specific moment in time. Family portraits also usually end up showcased somewhere in your house so there is pressure to get that perfect picture. These 5 tips will help you create a beautiful, frame-worthy family photograph that will make you proud.
Location, location, location!
The lighting, location, time of day, and weather are all key elements for a picture perfect family photograph. Check the forecast a day or two before your planned date and make adjustments if you picked an outdoor location. Also, try to pick a venue that’s not typically crowded so you don’t have to worry about that stray stranger in the background or random photo bomber ruining the shot. I have had to learn the hard way to carefully survey the surroundings before taking a snapshot!
If you are arranging your own family picture, try to coordinate outfits so no one matches and no clashes. If you are arranging a family photo for a client, try to suggest theme ideas so the clients can coordinate without matching. Coordinated outfits exudes a sense of unity which makes for an exceptional family portrait.
Bring a snack!
It’s amazing how being hungry can affect a person’s mood, especially a child’s. Never underestimate the power of offering a snack to a cranky client or family member. Try to pick a no mess, high protein snack such as mixed nuts or beef jerky. Depending on the snack, make sure you have some floss, just in case!
A good word goes a long way. I try to tell a family member or client that I love their hair style, shoes, or smile and it gives them a boost of confidence that will shine through in the photographs. It usually makes the difference between a good picture and a great picture.
Keep the family engaged with trying a variety of shots and poses, including a few fun or silly ones. Get feedback from the family to see if there are any specific shots or poses that they would like to try. My personal favorite are the forced perspective shots which create interesting optical illusions.
