Many people believe that it is important to help others across the world. One organization that helps people in many countries to get things like medical care, running water, food and shelter is the Peace Corps. Most people are unfamiliar with this organization. Here are five facts that you should know about the Peace Corps.
President John F. Kennedy Was the Inspiration for the Peace Corps
According to JFKLibrary.org, “Kennedy proposed ‘a peace corps of talented men and women’ who would dedicate themselves to the progress and peace of developing countries. Encouraged by more than 25,000 letters responding to his call, Kennedy took immediate action as president to make the campaign promise a reality.” JFK often mentioned in his speeches about helping others. He wanted people to do not only good deeds for themselves but for their country and those in other countries.
The 1960’s made people more aware of the world around them. This helped to inspire people to want to come together and help others. John F. Kennedy’s speech became a call to action for people and his words ring true even today. Many young people now make volunteering part of their daily lives.
The Peace Corps Began in 1961
According to JFKLibrary.org, “the Peace Corps was established by executive order on March 1, 1961, and a reluctant R. Sargent Shriver accepted the president’s request to officially lead the organization.” Shriver is the father of Maria Shriver who is John F. Kennedy’s cousin. The Kennedy family still is involved with the organization to this day.
Women Make Up a Majority of the Volunteers Today
According to PeaceCorps.gov, “63 percent of volunteers are female and 37 percent of volunteers are male.” This shift signifies that women have become more involved in helping the world around them. Women are often thought to be more maternal. This type of instinct can drive them to want to go to other countries and helps those who are less fortunate than they are.
The Peace Corps Hopes to Achieve World Peace
According toWVU.edu,”the goal of the Peace Corps is to promote world peace by: helping people of interested countries meet their need for trained men & women, promoting a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples serve and promoting a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans.” World peace has been a goal for several decades. The Peace Corps helps to train individuals so that they can go out in the world and make an impact so that the goal is more attainable.
Most Peace Corps Volunteers Are over the Age of Twenty
According to PeaceCorps. gov, “the average age of volunteers is 28.7 years old.” This signifies that many individuals that volunteer are likely older and have graduated college and have attained some work experience. This can often help people whoa re volunteering as they are more mature and can often handle situations in which they might be in areas where there are few amenities that they have at home like electricity, running water and wireless Internet connections.
