If you have a dog then you probably have been through a few pet food recalls. When your dog food is recalled this can be very difficult to deal with. You now have to worry about your dog and whether or not they will be sick after eating something that is not good for them. Having been around dogs my entire life, and seeing how the wrong kind of dog food can affect them, I have found a natural diet best. So the solution for many including myself is to make your own natural dog food. So how can you get started with doing this? Below are five steps to getting your dog on a natural diet.
Step 1: Do your research
Start by researching the type of food that is healthy for your type of dog. Remember that what will be best for your dog’s breed and size can be different from another. You can find a lot of information and resources online. After you have gathered all of the information take it to your vet and see what they think. If the vet does not want you to go natural and keeps trying to get you to use some packaged food, they may not have your pet’s best interest in mind. However if they give you a few ideas before you switch to the natural diet than take down some notes, because it may prove helpful to you.
Step 2: Switch gradually
When it comes to making your own homemade dog food you will want to do the switch gradually and introduce natural food one at a time. For example if you choose to go with chicken gizzards, than make this the base of your homemade food for the first month. The second month you can introduce another type of meat like chicken liver. This way you can see how your dog will respond to the change in recipes. It should be easier to make a switch in recipes than when you switch processed food.
Step 3: Go with Organ meat
Organ meat, which is the type of meat that most of us don’t like to eat is actually very good for your dog. For example, chicken gizzards, chicken livers, and beef liver. Try to look for all natural organic meat to ensure that this is as natural as possible for the dog. There are many benefits to giving your dog organ meats. This article may also prove to be helpful if you are considering the big switch.
Step 4: Keep track of your recipes
As you find recipes that work for your dog, keep it and store it. You will probably end up having several different recipes that works for your dog, so you will want to make sure you make them the same each time. Some recipes may not work so get rid of these. This will help when you have your day set up to cook your dog food. Organizing your recipes so that you can make all of the food once a month and freeze the extras.
Step 5: Foods to avoid
You will also want to make a list of foods that you have to avoid. There are some foods that are dangerous to your dog and you need to know what they are. If you are making a recipe book and the danger food list to it as well. This way you will not accidentally add an ingredient that could cause you problems later. Your vet will also be able to tell you what foods your dog should not have.
