There are some major misconceptions in society about what schizophrenia is and what causes it. Here are five things that you probably are not aware about concerning schizophrenia.
What It Isn’t
One of the biggest myths that many hold about schizophrenia is that it is when people have more than one personality. When people have several different personalities, that they are not generally aware of, it is called Multiple Personality Disorder, so it is not the same.
Multiple Personality Disorder is not the only psychological condition that is confused with schizophrenia. Bipolar disorder can cause an abrupt shift in mood that can be misinterpreted as either of these by someone not familiar with the symptoms of schizophrenia.
Keep in mind that it is possible that these other mental health conditions can exist simultaneously with schizophrenia. Psychology is a developing science and there are many things yet to be discovered.
What It Is
The symptoms of schizophrenia are many. It helps to picture the way the general homeless person looks and acts. They tend to not worry about bathing or wearing clean clothes.
They seem disorientated and slur their speech sometimes having problems forming complete sentences or finishing thought patterns.
Environment and genetics play a role in the development of the disorder. Environment is one thing that is considered when treating the illness. A satisfying job, supporting friends, and other things, many take for granted, can be useful to treat the condition.
Schizophrenia literally means splitting of the mind. Some of the mental elements that are put together to form what we refer to as normal human behavior become disjointed and torn apart from each other.
Serious Health Issue
There is a correlation with being schizophrenic and a poor lifestyle. This is reason enough to do what is necessary to get the illness under control as soon as possible.
Many people that have illness are often overweight, have a poor diet, abuse tobacco products heavily, and do little exercise. This kind of behavior is known to decrease life expectancy by a factor of up to 25 years even for people that are considered normal.
The brain of someone with the mental health condition called schizophrenia has some differences from one that is normal. What can be considered a normal brain may be up for debate, but researchers have found some facts worth noting.
Some people with the disorder have changes in brain waves when measured with PET or IMRI. These pattern changes are most noticeable in the frontal lobes and several other brain regions. There can also be a reduction of the measurable physical size of those areas, but not to be confused with other mental conditions where this is also true.
Psychologists have a hard job. They have to figure out what is wrong, which can be difficult, and then determine how to cure it. Everyone is different and it is hard to label human behavior, especially when another human is doing it. Psychology has advanced far, but still in it’s infancy.
Psychologists must also work within what are considered social norms. The DSM5, 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual used by Psychologists is updated occasionally and there were several changes to the diagnosis of schizophrenia in the latest edition. This shows that there is a continual evolution in the treatment and diagnosis in the field of Abnormal Psychology.
